Insights from TEDx Talk- Enhancing Team Communication Through Effective Strategies

The video depicts listening as an integral part of communication. The world views communication as just talking and expressing oneself, but the most overlooked piece that completes the whole puzzle is the reception of the expressed information, and that underlines the role of listening. However, one challenge experienced in listening is mental disruptions and distractions that hinder one’s ability to concentrate and listen to the unspoken rather than just hearing the spoken.

Listening tags along a couple of advantages. Firstly, it eases comprehension as the listener is able to capture the feelings and actual desires of the speaking party. As such, change is possible when the current angle is established. Secondly, listening creates a rapport that automatically transforms the conversation, thus shifting the mood of engagement. The two factors birth conflict resolution when listening is integrated as an art of communication. Layman’s consideration may depict listening as an easy thing, but the fact that it moves the spotlight from the listener to the speaker complicates the matter a little. Therefore for one to listen, they have to be guided by the feelings of the other party rather than their interests.

The question that strikes the mind immediately is if one listens correctly, but the speaking party does not possess the same listening skills, would the contagious nature still be maintained, thus accomplishing the conflict resolution role of listening? The question is necessitated by the instantaneous interest developed by the proposal that listening helps in conflict resolution. Though I don’t entirely dispute the impact of listening to that end, I think the effectiveness of listening is greatly reduced if only one party listens appropriately. However, the video has been impactful on my view on listening, and I would definitely try to incorporate the feelings and ideas of others during future interactions. Conclusively, the talk is elemental in changing the course of interactions and negotiations.
