Healthcare Manager Responsibilities
Healthcare managers have a challenging job balancing between the entrepreneurial and patient care aspects of management (Longest & Darr, 2014). They make decisions that often attract heavy public scrutiny, especially when decisions are deemed to have been motivated by profit maximization as opposed to patient care. These managers are under immense pressure to ensure efficient high production with limited resources. To that end, healthcare managers need to understand their social responsibilities and the concepts of public health ethics to promote socially and ethically responsible healthcare organizations (Morrison, 2006).
Healthcare organizations have to be profitable to meet operational needs and costs to realize high-quality care for their patients (Davis, 1973). Healthcare managers are responsible for the creation of the framework and administration support to facilitate the smooth running of day-to-day operations. The roles of health managers include managing skilled staff, improving facility efficiency and quality, budgeting, accounting, policymaking, communications, payroll administration, and reimbursement (Collins, 2010). For example, they oversee the effective management of financial resources. This is more vital when the monies are coming from federal and state funds through Medicaid and Medicare payments. As a result, there is a need for social involvement and consciousness to promote employee quality of life and that of the community. They have to be aware of the societal impact of the organization.
The biggest issue I may face as a health manager is addressing the rising healthcare costs, especially in the post-COVID-19 era. With the shift and evolution of medical care into an evidence-based model, healthcare costs are rising, requiring a rethink in business administration.
In conclusion, healthcare managers are responsible for the creation of the framework and administration support to facilitate the smooth running of day-to-day operations. There is immense pressure for them to ensure that healthcare organizations are socially and ethically responsible.
