Term Definition How the Term is Used in Health Care
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) This federal statute necessitated the development of national guidelines that protect any personal health information about a patient from being shared or disclosed without the patient’s knowledge or permission. The HIPAA is used as a national standard that gives patients rights to the health information collected by healthcare providers and standards to which the healthcare providers must handle, store, and protect the medical records, including personally identifiable information. Failure to comply with these standards breaches federal law (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022).
Electronic medical record (EMR) These are digital patient information records physicians or other professional care providers collect and maintain about a particular patient and that the care providers use to tailor patient care. EMRs are used in single-practice settings such as pediatrics, obstetrics, or dental clinics to provide digital patient chat. EMRs can improve the practitioner’s efficiency by enabling fast access to patient medical records. They also support faster billing, health and treatment progress tracking, and expenditure and other costs incurred during treatment.
Electronic health record (EHR) This is a computerized version of a patient’s care chart implemented within a hospital or hospital system that provides a more comprehensive overview of the patient’s medical history. EHRs are used within diverse healthcare settings to improve the efficiency of access and sharing of patient health information and records in real time. EHRs also enable healthcare providers to update patient information as it is received. They also support the collaboration of care, even between remote care teams.

The term is used in healthcare settings, especially in the management of treatments and medications. The systems improve the efficiency of medication prescription and administration. They help prescribers and caregivers identify drug-to-drug interactions effectively, identify errors in orders, and prevent harmful medication errors (Edrees et al., 2020).
Unique patient identifier A method or rather an approach that healthcare providers use for patient identification in which each individual is assigned a unique code through which the health provider or institution can use to identify the patient and their health information rather than use their names or any other personally identifiable information. Unique patient identifiers are used in healthcare settings to efficiently identify and match patients and their health information using a set of unique codes. The codes eliminate the need to search the health database and the risk of exposing personal information about the patient in case of unauthorized access.
Protected health information (PHI) PHI is any patient health information used in health insurance and other care settings that can be used to identify a patient, including their name, medication history, business, address, work, social security number, and other personal identifiers that healthcare organizations hold. Healthcare providers and related businesses are required to meet the standards provided by the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules with regard to the protection of PHI during storage, transferring, use, or any other forms of handling the PHI. Meeting HIPAA standards leads to HIPAA compliance certification.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) The CMS is an agency under the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that ensures the efficiency and success of the country’s critical healthcare programs, including Medicare, Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and any other insurance transaction within the state and federal health settings. CMS is used in reference to U.S. public healthcare coverage. As a government insurance agency, CMS is mandated to collect and analyze health data on the population data, develop research reports, and eliminate healthcare access barriers related to the costs of care.
Covered entities These are the healthcare providers, coverage plans, insurance companies, payers, and any other businesses and institutions that collect, store, process and share electronic patient information. In healthcare, covered entities have the authority to handle and manage PHI. The HIPAA categorizes covered entities as healthcare providers, health plans, and clearinghouses. Covered entities must comply with the rules and regulations provided by the HIPAA and the Privacy Rule.
Health information exchange (HIE) HIE enables the sharing and accessing of health information over electronic systems that providers and patients apply in healthcare settings. HIE is used in healthcare settings to define how electronic health information systems help meet the care needs of patients as well as in care collaboration to improve care delivery. HIE creates an electronic ecosystem that allows care providers and patients to exchange health information securely.
Telehealth Telehealth is the application of electronic communication technologies such as smartphones video calling services, and the Internet to provide healthcare services remotely.

 

In telehealth, care services are basically provided online via a computer or a simple phone call. Telehealth supports healthcare delivery in situations where mobility is limited, geographical barriers, or contact is limited. Telehealth eliminates the need for patients and physicians to meet physically, improving healthcare accessibility, efficiency, and costs (Chuo et al., 2020).
