Group Discussion – Conflict Video
Mitchell (2013) states better quality conversations increase team motivation and productivity (p. 43). However, some leaders lack good communication skills, leading to low-quality conversations that may lead to a lack of collaboration between the team and their leader. In The Confident Supervisor Conflict Management Supervisor Training conversation, I observed a few things relating to the supervisor’s conversation quality. One of the observations is that he establishes rapport with the employee to get his opinion about what should be done concerning Kelly’s dress code. I also observed that he focuses on getting one of the employee’s opinions about Kelly’s dress code and creates a friendly environment for the employee to express his opinion.
Notably, the supervisor did not communicate well with Kelly because he made major communication mistakes. For instance, he left a note informing Kelly that one of the employees was complaining about her outfit and revealed the employee’s name, which could create conflict between Kelly and the employee. He also left the note on Kelly’s desk where everyone could see, even if the message was only meant for Kelly. The employee, Kelly, responded by writing an email to Beth to confront her for reporting her to the supervisor for wearing revealing clothes and adding John to the email recipient risk so that he could see the conversation.
Although the supervisor did well by seeking the opinion of another employee to confirm Beth’s complaints and confirm his observation regarding Kelly’s dressing, he mishandled the communication between him and Kelly. He could have passed the message to Kelly face to face or emailed her to inform her that her dress code was not allowed in the workplace. It was also inappropriate for the supervisor to disclose the name of the employee who had complained about Kelly’s dress code.
In my opinion, the supervisor could have just informed Kelly that some employees were complaining about her dress code without disclosing the employees’ names. The supervisor should also have sought the opinion of another female employee regarding Kelly’s dress code before informing Kelly about the complaints. He should also have informed Kelly about the recommended dress code through a formal email.
