Grad School Personal Statement
Graduate school programs provide an opportunity for learners to advance their skills and gain entry into professional job markets. I chose to pursue a graduate degree program to complement my academic and professional needs. I selected a degree program at the University of Alabama because of the reviews received from my colleagues on how good the program is. I also feel the university best suits my academic needs as the structures put into place by the administration, coupled with its operationalization framework, make it my preferred university choice. I believe that their commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service will catapult me toward attaining my academic ambitions.
The global healthcare landscape has significantly evolved in the recent past. Efforts towards healthcare improvement are manifested in diverse healthcare innovations centered on access to care. Preventive medicine is an evidence-based care approach that continues to shape healthcare operationalizations. Informed by the need to improve community health and wellness, preventive medicine focuses on the approaches to mitigate diseases by advocating for community and individual-level interventions that safeguard communities from harmful health effects of diseases. As a health advocate and educator, I believe I can leverage my advocacy and educational skills to educate underserved communities on preventive medicine and other health issues.
Underserved communities are still affected by traditional problems such as poor access to healthcare and other health inequities that significantly jeopardize their health and wellness. These communities often score poorly in various social determinants of health parameters such as literacy, education level, income status, and access to healthcare. Creating an awareness of preventive medicine will significantly elevate the health of these communities. It will ensure that they are better knowledgeable on various diseases and illnesses and the preventive measures against common diseases.
The training at the University of Alabama will considerably enhance my advocacy skills and expand my educative capabilities on diverse healthcare issues. The specialized knowledge learned from the institutions will also enhance my capacity to influence positive changes in the community. This expansive knowledge base and skill set will enable me to help underserved communities better. It will widen my perspectives on individual-level and community-level challenges that affect these communities and how I can leverage my skills to help them.
As a health educator, my expansive knowledge base on multivariate healthcare issues affecting underserved communities will enable me to help them become more health literate. By educating them on various health provisions and preventive approaches to common ailments, they will be better accountable for taking care of themselves. Additionally, it will enhance their healthcare-seeking behavior, thereby contributing to their overall wellness.
The training at the University of Alabama will also fine-tune my nursing skills and give me the specialized skills necessary for health promotion and preservation. As a practicing nurse, I see many patients with little or no knowledge of preventive medicine. The FNP program will considerably elevate my nursing skills and help me provide high-quality patient care. It will also help me communicate the significance of preventive care to them and how they can utilize the approach to improve their health outcomes. In the pursuit of high-quality care, the advancement of healthcare skills is central to quality improvement. It is, therefore, imperative that more nurses pursue graduate degree programs to further elevate the level of care.
