Globalization and the Southeast Asian Economy

Globalization and the Southeast Asian Economy

One of the significant topics in Chapter 13 of the book is the global integration of the Southeast Asian economy. Despite Southeast Asia’s history of isolation from the world economy, globalization is gradually taking shape to bolster economic growth. Some economic areas in which Southeast Asian countries have staked to gain entry into the global economy include multinational capitalism, finance, tourism, and labor-intensive manufacturing (Rowntree 446-447). Tourism visits to Southeast Asia countries have grown by more than 10% since 1995 (Rowntree 446). The growth of tourism in the region is attributable to its world-premiering tourist destinations and beaches. Do you need help with your assignment ? Get in touch with us at eminencepapers.com.

Notably, the economic integration of the Southeast Asia region into the global economy has laid bare the globalization controversies the region faces. Much of the economic integration in Southeast Asia focuses on labor-intensive industries. Multinational companies from the US, Europe, and elsewhere move production to these areas to leverage cheap labor. Labor-intensive manufacturing in Southeast Asia is characterized by poor wages and harsh punishments for workers (Rowntree 447). The trend has led to growing movements in Europe and the US demanding improvement in working conditions (Rowntree 447). Besides, the economic integration of Southeast Asia into the global economy has revealed the inherent gender pay parity between male and female workers. Economic integration will play a key role in alleviating these socio-economic controversies.

The role of China in the globalization of Southeast Asia economies cannot be overstated. China has invested heavily in infrastructural projects in Burma, Laos, and Cambodia. Some of the projects China has facilitated include railways, dams, highways, and ports (Rowntree 447). Southeast leaders welcome China’s role in integrating the region into the global economy. However, the political attachments that sometimes accompany China’s investments are a concern to the region.
