Global Cultural Awareness

Global Cultural Awareness

Global cultural intelligence refers to the ability to recognize and associate with others and interact effectively across different cultures that exist around the globe. Cultural intelligence is vital for multicultural organizations as it can provide a workplace advantage (Cuccurullo & Cinganotto, 2020). Three examples of such companies include Nike through its “just do it” slogan, Apple Inc. through innovation, Mcdonald’s through workplace diversity, and Facebook through paying attention to the community. Notably, companies need to address cultural awareness on a global scale due to the differences in the people across the globe on cultural matters. According to Wilson (2020), cultural differences can influence the success of a company, and thus, when companies remain culturally aware on a global scale, they can break down cultural barriers in their workplace, teach employees to appreciate those different from them, and help them to learn how to love and create cultural bridges. Also, cultural awareness on a global scale helps organizations achieve teamwork towards achieving objectives since employees can understand themselves and other people better.

Organizations can build global cultural awareness by offering training on global cultural awareness. Some crucial aspects in which training is given include cultural diversity and how to relate with different people effectively. Also, organizations can create policies surrounding cultural diversity to help define global cultural awareness. Additionally, organizations can celebrate cultures and diversity, which will enhance employees’ cultural awareness. One common cultural misunderstanding relates to hand gestures. Notably, this misunderstanding occurs due to different meanings of gestures. For example, a thumbs up will mean “okay” in the United States. However, in Iran, it will be an insult. Another misunderstanding relates to embracing, which differs in meaning across countries in Qatar, East Asia, and Europe (Scott‐Phillips et al., 2018). Accordingly, various remedies can address these misunderstandings. These entail being culturally aware and sensitive while respecting other people’s cultures while interacting with them.

Question

Consider the following list of ‘unspoken’ rules for the workplace as compiled by Ashia Gallo (2017):
*Do not discuss your pay.
*Do not date colleagues.
*Do not use technology, personal or work devices, for personal use.

Global Cultural Awareness

Global Cultural Awareness

*Do not show up repeatedly late to work.
*Do not talk about religion, politics or other controversial topics.
*Do not steal office supplies.

Do you think that this list applies to every workplace? Is it possible that the culture of a workplace or organization might change some of the items on this list to being acceptable? It is likely that many companies would add items to the list of rules and make these rules clear and not ‘unspoken’ as the author suggests. While organizations do their best to create policies and guidelines to promote a safe work environment, many companies create and institute policies which promote diversity and cultural awareness.

In addition to setting rules about what is acceptable and ethical behavior for interactions among employees of diverse backgrounds, companies can increase awareness of cultural differences by celebrating diversity and cultures, researching the communication norms of the different cultures, and taking the time to value diversity through education (Ahmed, 2020). Acknowledging and addressing culture problems and finding ways to reconcile the sometimes-subtle differences can lead to improved productivity and communication (Landry, 2018). According to Lamson (2018), building cultural competency in business, while a continuous process that is response and fluid in nature, “builds one of the most valuable assets your organization will have”.

In this Discussion, you will explore global cultural intelligence and the importance of addressing cultural awareness on a global scale in business. You will discuss several ways organizations can build global cultural awareness and provide a remedy for common cultural misunderstandings.

**Define global cultural intelligence and provide three examples of companies known for their superior global cultural awareness.
**Explain why it is important for companies to address cultural awareness on a global scale.
**Identify three ways organizations can build global cultural awareness within their organizations.
**Identify two global cultural misunderstandings (e.g., embracing is acceptable in Latin cultures but is not acceptable in Asian cultures).
**Describe a remedy for each situation that you identify.
