Forming The Team
Introduction
Teamwork is essential in completing tasks efficiently within the shortest time possible. The team’s effectiveness is determined by the team members’ skills, competencies, and willingness to collaborate. This paper discusses different activities considered in forming an effective team. The activities include envisioning the team, picking team members, and leading an effective team. The section on envisioning the team focuses on the team purpose statement, the team members’ specific roles, the traits and skills that every role will require, and why they are critical. The section on picking the team members will focus on the scouting techniques that will be used to recruit team members. It will also include the plan to research potential candidates, how valuable candidates will be persuaded and attracted to join the team, the key roles on the team, and the testing or evaluation recommended for the roles and why they are appropriate. Lastly, the leading an effective team section will focus on the characteristics that will be important for the team to be effective and successful and why they are key, strategies that will be used to be the leader the team needs, and strategies for increasing team effectiveness.
Envisioning the Team
The team’s purpose is to offer guidance on market entry strategies that can be used to launch new products and services in the market successfully. The team comprises a marketing manager, market researcher, brand strategist, marketing consultant, and data analyst. The marketing manager will guide the team members on what they should do to meet the team’s purpose and provide the resources the team members need to complete assigned tasks. The main tasks that the marketing manager will perform include conflict management, communicating the progress of the marketing project to the VP, and delegating tasks to other team members based on their knowledge, skills, and competencies. The market researcher will conduct a detailed Porter’s five forces, PESTEL, and SWOT analysis of the new product to determine its success rate in the market. According to Schroiff (2015), market research is vital when launching a new product because it enables the organization or business to prepare for challenges such as completion and changes in the business environment. Therefore, the market researcher’s main tasks include reviewing trends that could impact the product’s performance in the market, issuing surveys to customers to get their perception of the product and gathering market insight data, summarizing it, and presenting the findings to the team.
The brand strategist will create the long-term strategy that will be implemented to increase sales and maintain customer satisfaction and recommend appropriate brand positioning strategies and other brand management approaches that can be used to increase brand value. The brand strategist’s main tasks will include developing the marketing stories that the brand can use to attract customers and assessing the effectiveness of the brand positioning strategy. Waller (2020) argues that brand positioning can create a competitive advantage based on customers’ perceptions of a brand. The marketing consultant will review the marketing strategies to determine their effectiveness and recommend improvement areas. The main tasks the marketing consultant will complete include reviewing customer insights to determine the changes that should be made in the marketing strategies and overseeing the implementation of marketing strategies. The data analyst will analyze market research data and customer insights. Their main tasks will be identifying data sources for market research, analyzing market data, and creating a database to store information.
The team’s success relies on each team member’s skills. Therefore, the marketing manager will require good problem-solving and communication skills to effectively handle problems that may affect the team’s performance and communicate the team’s purpose to the team members and the project’s progress to the VP. The marketing researcher will require good communication skills to present the market research findings. Also, the brand strategist will require teamwork skills to collaborate with the team members in increasing brand value and selecting an effective brand positioning strategy. The marketing consultant will require attention to detail and good communication skills to create a clear marketing message and identify improvement areas in the advertisements and marketing campaigns. The data analyst will require good research skills to analyze data effectively.
Picking Your People
The team members will be selected based on their skills, personalities, and strengths. Personality will be assessed through personality compatibility assessment, while the DiSC personality assessment tool will be used to assess every member’s personality. According to Owen et al. (2020), the DiSC tool focuses on a person’s influence, dominance, steadiness, and conscientiousness. The scouting techniques that will be used to recruit the team members include referrals and word of mouth. Employees will be requested to refer people who can complete the identified tasks that the team members will complete. Word of mouth will be used to inform employees about the vacant team member positions and the skills the team members interested in different roles should have.
Individuals interested in joining the team will be evaluated before they are recruited to ensure they are fit for the position. For example, those interested in the data analyst position will be given a data set to analyze to determine whether they have the required data analysis and presentation skills. Similarly, the market researcher and consultant will answer some marketing-related questions in a hypothetical case study to determine their competence based on how they respond to the questions. The applicant interested in the brand strategist position will be assessed by developing a brand positioning strategy for a hypothetical case study. The marketing manager will complete a personality assessment to ensure they can influence and collaborate with other team members. The DiSC personality test will be used to ensure that the marketing manager has an i profile. According to Owen et al. (2020), the i profile focuses on creating good relationships with others. Individuals with the profile are talkative, spontaneous, persuasive, and enthusiastic. The marketing manager should have these traits to meet the team members engaged in meeting the team’s purpose.
Leading an Effective Team
The four characteristics important for the team to be effective and successful are trust, open communication, defined goals, and assigned roles. Trust and open communication are vital in maintaining team cohesiveness and ensuring the team members work together to meet the team’s goals and purpose. Having defined goals is vital in creating a sense of direction among the team members, thus ensuring that all team members work towards achieving the same thing. Assigned roles are vital in reducing team members’ conflict because every member knows what is expected of them.
One of the strategies I will use to be a leader the team needs is delegating tasks based on the team member’s skills and capabilities so that the team members do not struggle to complete assigned tasks. I will also motivate the team members through recognition and support them by ensuring they access the resources needed to complete assigned tasks. I will increase team effectiveness by facilitating open communication so that team members can share their ideas and opinions. I will also create a diverse team to facilitate diversity in opinions and experiences.
Conclusion
Developing an effective team is a process that requires considering each team member’s roles and whether the selected team members have the skills and competencies needed to complete the roles. It is also important to create a team purpose and communicate it to all team members so they have a common sense of direction. Team leadership also plays a vital role in the team’s effectiveness based on how the team leader relates with the team members and delegates tasks. Team leaders should also be able to influence team members and persuade them to consider a specific action based on the team’s purpose.
