Financial Assistance and Resource Allocation in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Dear Madam,
I am writing to you regarding my visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Conflict in this country has created humanitarian crises in various parts. Firstly, the eastern part of DRC has been experiencing armed conflict between a rebel movement and the country’s army (ICRC.org, 2023). This conflict has impacted residents negatively. For instance, it is estimated at least 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes in Eastern DRC (ICRC.org, 2023). This population is in dire need of clean water, proper nutrition, and shelter. Furthermore, the population is at risk of communicable diseases such as cholera. Also, more than 4,000 cases of measles have been recorded among children (Reliefweb. int, 2023). This has resulted in more than 20 deaths (Reliefweb. int, 2023). This risk is compounded by the fact that the population lacks access to healthcare services. Displaced families have sought refuge from different parts, such as Lac Vert (Bulengo) (ICRC.org, 2023). This site is a health hazard because of its high methane gas due to volcanic activity (ICRC.org, 2023).
Secondly, inter-communal wars in the western part of the country have resulted in mortalities and displacements. The wars relate to land disputes and customary power and are marked by looting, destruction of property, and killings (HRW.org, 2023). Over the past year, these clashes have claimed more than three hundred lives (HRW.org, 2023). In addition, more than fifty thousand people have been displaced over the past year (HRW.org, 2023). These internally displaced persons face various challenges, including limited access to basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, and water (HRW.org, 2023). Also, they have limited access to proper healthcare services. Children are the worst affected because they are predisposed to diseases such as malaria and have limited access to education.
Please accept my appeal for financial assistance and resource allocation to address the humanitarian crises in these regions. This assistance will be channeled into different sectors. To begin with, it will be used to provide adequate nutrition to the displaced families in the eastern and western DRC. Nutritional services will entail clean water and adequate food portions for the families. Adequate nutrition will avert the risk of starvation and death in the affected population. Furthermore, adequate nutrition will prevent malnutrition and allow proper growth and development among children. Also, financial assistance and resources will be used to avail basic healthcare needs. For example, it will facilitate the acquisition, distribution, and administration of cholera vaccines and measles vaccines. By so doing, the risk of these communicable diseases will be lowered. The resources will be used to construct makeshift hospitals so that this population can access timely healthcare services. In addition, the assistance will be used to construct temporary shelters to protect the displaced population from harsh environmental conditions. Lastly, the assistance will allow the families to re-settle at the end of the conflicts. These interventions are relevant because they will improve the health of the affected population. Notably, the biggest beneficiaries are children and expectant women.
