The researcher will examine the impacts of divorce and separation on adolescents’ mental and emotional development. This population is of interest because it is at this stage where the child needs both parents the most because of the emotional and cognitive changes they undergo. As such, the researchers examined the existing literature first to establish the areas other researchers have covered and to get detailed information on the topic. What is evident from the research done is that there is a direct connection between divorce or separation and the emotional and cognitive development of children. All the reviewed studies showed that divorce or separation can affect children’s emotions from as early as three years of age. The studies showed that detachment from one parent alone affects the children emotionally (Garriga & Pennoni, 2020). The changes in the family, like the need to balance between two different families, also affect the children emotionally and psychologically. These events can make it difficult for them to adjust quickly. Another challenge discussed in the studies is that during separation and divorce, financial challenges emerge, and these challenges affect the child’s life and sometimes even their school attendance. What was noted, however, is that the studies mainly focused on younger children and did not place emphasis on teenagers.

The researchers anticipate discovering that divorce or separation affects teenagers’ emotional and mental health based on the data gathered from the review. With this in mind, the following hypothesis is made. Firstly, it is hypothesized that the research will show a direct connection between emotional and/or mental well-being and divorce or separation. Since this phenomenon affects children, teenagers are not left out, so it is believed that they are also affected (Nusinovici et al., 2018). Secondly, it is hypothesized that separation or divorce negatively impacts teenagers’ emotional and mental well-being. Most studies have shown that children are affected by living in two different families. It is also indicated in the reviewed studies that they are affected by financial changes and detachment from one family (Nusinovici et al., 2018). Thus, the researchers expect to see the same trend in teenagers.

The main ramification of this study is that it will add to the already existing knowledge in this area of study. It is evident from the review that the impacts of divorce and separation on teenagers are not fully covered. Therefore, this study is expected to increase knowledge on how divorce or separation affects teenagers mentally and emotionally. The results of this study will also be helpful to therapists because they will use the same to find better mechanisms to help teenagers whose parents are divorced or separated. Also, the information in this document will give a clear picture of the impact of divorce among adolescents so that the relevant stakeholders can join together to see what they can do to reduce cases of divorce or separation. They can also be alerted by the results to find means of helping adolescents overcome these effects of divorce to ensure mental and emotional health.

There are three limitations of this study. Firstly, the researcher has used quantitative research, meaning that the results will show the trend and outcomes of divorce and separation, but little will be revealed about the feelings and opinions of teenagers on their parents’ separation or divorce (Crawford & Novak, 2018), limiting detailed data. The second limitation is that the results will target a population of adolescents in one region only. Hence, it would be difficult to generalize the results because cultural connections between divorce and separation may affect the results. For instance, the child can live with other relatives in some cultures, while in some instances, culture may dictate different ways parents attend to the child in case of separation. This also can change the impact that divorce or separation has on adolescents. The third limitation is that this study has not factored in other issues, such as the financial background of the child and the parent-child relationship before the divorce or separation, which can affect the outcome of the results.

Two potential areas need further research concerning this topic. Firstly, future research should include finding out the opinions and feelings of teenagers concerning their parents’ separation or divorce. The study should employ a qualitative research method to give more information. The second area that requires further research is how teenagers respond to divorce or their parent’s separation. This future area of study should reveal the coping strategies and go further to show some of the negative and positive coping strategies to help experts find approaches that can help teenagers cope with this phenomenon healthily.
