Factors Contributing to Alcohol Consumption among College Students

Alcohol consumption is prevalent on college students’ campuses. College students’ alcohol consumption is mostly binge drinking, whereby they consume more than five drinks on one occasion. Accordingly, alcohol consumption is dependent on various variables (Weiten, Dunn, and Hammer, 2018). The variables include compatibility of values, relationship satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction; additionally, other factors such as leisure activity and social relations contribute to drinking among college students (Weiten, Dunn, and Hammer, 2018).

The first contributing factor is alcohol consumption for social relations. As college students make the desire to make new friends and fit in, they turn to alcohol assumption as the middle ground between them and making new friends. Accordingly, as they drink, friendships are created and continue to bloom through drinking, hence binge drinking.

The second contributing factor is alcohol consumption as a leisure activity. Accordingly, for some college students, alcohol consumption is a form of leisure activity with the objective to fulfill the desire and interact with others. Subsequently, social relations contribute to alcohol consumption for leisure. Consequently, binge drinking characterizes alcohol consumption for leisure, as the students desire to fulfill their alcohol desire. Accordingly, as they meet their desire and interact with others, they binge drink.

The third contributing factor is dependent on the causation of drinking. Causation is associated with three variables; compatibility of values, relationship satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction. Consequently, dissatisfaction in any of the three variables drives the students to consume alcohol. The three variables are dependent on each other, and therefore, drinking excessive alcohol is attributed to dissatisfaction in any of the three.

In conclusion, various factors contribute to alcohol consumption among college students. The majority of the time, alcohol consumption is done for fun and not due to negative attitudes. The most significant contributor to alcohol consumption among college students is the creation and maintenance of social relations.
