Exploring the Theme of Love and Family in The Latehomecomer

Exploring the Theme of Love and Family in The Latehomecomer

One of the themes in Chapter 5 of The Latehomecomer is the theme of love and family. This is a dominant theme in the chapter because the author describes how her family members interacted and how they remained united and encouraged one another when they faced challenges in most parts of the chapter. The author narrates, “I come from a family that believes profoundly in the strength of numbers. The adults talked about how they had survived the war in Laos only because there were so many of them; there were seven brothers who could help each other” (Yang 87). Based on this statement, one can tell that the author’s family believed in staying united to help each other, thus demonstrating the link between love and family. The statement also limits any confusion on the theme because it explains what family consists of and the role of each family member in the journey to a better life.

The theme of love and family is important to me because I come from a family that encourages every family member to participate in activities that help the family achieve a shared goal. My family members also love one another and look out for one another. For instance, we occasionally hold family gatherings and travel together. The theme of love and family, as demonstrated in the chapter, also connects with my belief that family should always stick together. I believe that the only thing that should separate the family is death because family members are in a better position to offer support since they understand the family’s journey and the challenges that each member has overcome to get to where they are.
