Exploring Sampling Methods- Types, Explanations, and Research Applications

The four types of sampling include simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, stratified random sampling, and cluster sampling. Simple random sampling entails having a sampling frame comprised of a list of every person within the sampling frame (Mauldin, 2020). This type of sampling might be best used in exploratory research. For instance, if a researcher seeks to study a topic on the use of phones on campus, they would need to use simple random sampling to randomly decide on students at the university using a computer-generated list of numbers to ensure that the sample is used truly random.

Systematic random sampling involves randomly selecting the first unit and then using a fixed period to select the remaining sample (Etikan & Bala, 2017). This type of sampling can be used in descriptive research. Using the example of finding the number of campus students using phones, the researcher can use this method to obtain this number more easily.

Stratified random sampling involves dividing the sampling frame into appropriate subgroups and then drawing a sample from every subgroup (Mauldin, 2020). This could be used in explanatory research. For instance, to find why most addicts at the university relapse after therapy, the researcher can use stratified random sampling to choose from the list of addicts in the university data.

Cluster sampling is when the researcher randomly samples clusters or groups of population elements and chooses certain elements from these selected groups (Mauldin, 2020). I would use cluster sampling in descriptive research. For instance, in an attempt to find out the number of students using gadgets in the university, a researcher might sample university students and then narrow it down to specific faculties in each year of the university to find out this information.
