Evidence-Based Practice Barriers

Evidence-Based Practice Barriers

Evidence-based practice (EBP) involves integrating research evidence, clinical knowledge, and patients’ needs to solve clinical problems and offer patient-centered care (Jolley, 2020). Evidence-based practice is beneficial since it enables nurses to use updated medical protocols during patient care. This leads to improved patient care and outcomes. There are several barriers to implementing evidence-based practice. The two barriers to evidence-based practice are the shortage of nursing staff and the lack of EBP-experienced staff at work.

The first obstacle is a shortage of nursing staff. A shortage of nursing staff leads to nurses working longer shifts with fewer nurses tending to more patients (Rosenberg, 2019). This leads to stress, fatigue, and nurses’ burnout. This negatively impacts the application of evidence-based practice and quality of care. Due to the higher patient-to-nurse ratios, nurses may not have the time to retrieve evidence-based literature due to the heavy workload. This thus gives them limited time to retrieve evidence that may be used in evidence-based practice. This barrier can be solved by employing adequate nurses to help with the workload and reduce burnout.

The second barrier is the lack of experienced nursing staff in integrating evidence-based practice. The nursing staff may not have the skills and knowledge required to retrieve data or interpret their statistics. The nurses may also not know how to use the computer to do a literature search and apply evidence-based practice. This barrier can be resolved by training the nursing staff on computer literacy and retrieving and interpreting statistical data. Lehane et al. (2018) note that training will help healthcare professionals develop the necessary skills and utilize the available resources and technology to integrate evidence-based practice into their day-to-day nursing practice.

Question

The Institute of Medicine has stated a goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. According to HealthyPeople.gov, the United States is currently at approximately 15%. Discuss two barriers that might prevent nursing practice from achieving this goal and suggest ways in which identified barriers may be addressed.

Currently, at my organization(CVS Health), we are short-staffed; we are only 4 nurses when it should be 10. we have an opening for 6 more nurses,
