Telehealth remains one of the most valuable health information technologies in current use. It utilizes technological devices to facilitate and deliver health and healthcare-related services. Accordingly, I chose telehealth because of its relevance to the modern healthcare landscape. I am interested in the topic because it continues to redefine care and its impact on enhancing care delivery to remote places. As healthcare provision shifts to virtual care, telehealth will become handy in facilitating healthcare delivery. In this paper, I employed web searches on Google Scholar and PubMed databases using the search terms “telehealth” and “Telemedicine.” This paper details four research papers on telehealth, detailing its current use, its role in nursing, barriers and challenges to its use, and prospects for its utility.

This article is a systematic review that examines the current state of telehealth utility in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Telehealth utilization in healthcare delivery has considerably increased. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted its significance in bridging gaps in care delivery accustomed to poor access. Research findings highlighted by Kichloo et al. (2020) reveal that telehealth use has the potential to not only enhance access to quality care but also lower the cost of healthcare services by eliminating logistical costs incurred when pursuing healthcare services. Telehealth devices, such as remote monitoring devices and video teleconferencing, can be used by nurses and other healthcare providers to deliver health services and health information remotely, thereby lowering physical encounters that otherwise perpetuate the spread of the virus (Kichloo et al., 2020). Reducing physical contact ensures the safety of the patients by minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. It also ensures that patients get quality healthcare services by allowing direct communication between them and their caregivers. Nurses, being front liners in care provision, can employ telehealth as a safety enhancement measure for spreading infection and providing care to their patients. Other interdisciplinary team members can also use these devices to remotely provide care to their patients and coordinate care with them. This article highlights the current state of telehealth utility and gives insight into its relevance to healthcare practice. Provisions from this article can inform the implementation of telehealth in other healthcare facilities.

Role of Telehealth in Nursing

It compares physical therapists’ and nurse practitioners’ care models of managing back pain via teleconferencing versus physical patient encounters and finds similarities in interventions and subsequent efficacy in pain relief. According to Lovo et al. (2022), telehealth devices can be used to provide quality care to patients remotely. They also provide safety safeguards for the patient by ensuring that effective healthcare interventions are done for the patients. It also highlights how nursing care roles can be executed remotely to elicit similar efficacy as physical patient-nurse encounters. Nurses and the interdisciplinary team in its entirety can utilize provisions from this article in the chronic care and care continuum. It shifts the paradigm of comprehensive care by giving insights into delivery approaches where nurses can collaborate with other interdisciplinary team members in recommending healthcare interventions to their patients remotely. This article details the effectiveness of telehealth in remote patient management. It is relevant and gives insight into the utility of this technology in the care continuum and management recommendations.

Barriers and Challenges to the Implementation of Telehealth

This is a review article that details the challenges and barriers to the implementation of telehealth for persons with disabilities. These challenges include infrastructural and access barriers, regulatory barriers, operational challenges, and communication and legislative barriers. Persons with disabilities, being a vulnerable population, are disproportionately affected by these challenges. According to Annaswamy et al. (2020), the barriers to telehealth use among people with disabilities considerably affect their access to quality care. These barriers may also jeopardize their safety by denying them access to care. Nurses play a role in advancing these technologies in vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities. As health educators, they can educate these groups on the effective use of these technologies and custom solutions to address the barriers affecting telehealth implementation. The interdisciplinary team also plays a role in coordinating efforts to address these barriers and advance the use of these technologies. This article highlights how barriers to telehealth implementation disproportionately affect vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities. It informs on the need to address these barriers as a measure for promoting health equity.

Prospects of Telehealth Utility

This review article details the prospects of telehealth use, emphasizing the future adoption of telehealth into mainstream care provision. Barberio & Jenkins (2021) recap the impacts telehealth has had on care operationalization and how they have changed care approaches from traditional physical encounters to virtual encounters with healthcare professionals. This has considerably enhanced access to quality care and eliminated barriers to care accustomed to geographical locations. As care approaches shift towards patient-centered approaches and self-care, telehealth will continue to underline these approaches. Regulatory and legislative changes will have to be made to enhance operational flexibility and cross-border care provision for nurse practitioners and other care providers to ensure the advancement of telehealth. Telehealth provides a framework for quality care provision and safety enhancement by allowing remote care delivery and patient monitoring and surveillance (Barberio & Jenkins, 2021). Provisions from this article are relevant to nursing practice as they define prospects on the scope of nursing practice and how nurses can employ telehealth to deliver care. It also informs the role of the interdisciplinary team in future practice and why they should transition to telehealth as a future model of healthcare delivery. This article details the prospects for health. It informs on current changes that can be made to enhance the future operational efficiency of telehealth, such as wavering restrictive laws.

Conclusion

Telehealth remains a valuable health information technology utilizable in the remote management of patients. This technology eliminates the traditional barriers to access to healthcare accustomed to geographical location and other physical barriers. Telehealth gained dominance during the COVID pandemic when movement restrictions were imposed, and physical encounters with healthcare providers were challenging. This healthcare technology maintains effectiveness in patient management and utilizes similar interventions as those used in contact management of various illnesses. As care approaches shift to patient-centered approaches, virtual care through telehealth remains a viable option for addressing various patient complaints. Furthermore, these approaches ensure patients have access to quality care and lower costs by eliminating logistical costs in pursuing healthcare. Prospects of the use of telehealth reveal that care approaches are shifting to telehealth use, with telehealth devices expected to dominate care interventions and approaches.

You will prepare an annotated bibliography on technology in nursing. A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice.
