Events that Have Shaped the Nursing Profession

Events that Have Shaped the Nursing Profession

The event I chose for this discussion that has greatly shaped the development of the profession of nursing is in 1993 when the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) was established as an institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The establishment of the NINR at the NIH followed a series of laws and advocacies focused on the recognition of the role of nursing research in health care. The law, the Public Law 99-158, the 1985 Health Research Extension Act, was signed into law on November 20, 1985, which supported the creation of the National Center for Nursing Research (NCNR) with a focus on research and training at the NIH (National Institutes of Health (NIH), 2020).

Various achievements in nursing research have created the need to recognize the NCNR as an institute of the NIH fully. For instance, Dr. David Olds and fellow researchers’ study linked home visits from nurses to significant positive outcomes in pregnant women (Olds & Kitzman, 1993). The NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 was signed into law on June 10, 1993, and elevated the NCNR to an NIH Institute. The NCNR was then changed to the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) (National Institutes of Health (NIH), 2020). On June 14, 1993, the Department of Human and Health Services (DHHS) secretary signed a notice that recognized the NINR as an NIH institute.

The establishment of the NINR as an institute of the NIH in 1993 had significant positive impacts on the way nursing developed as well as on nursing in general. For instance, nursing research became more recognized in health settings, and there was an improvement in the budget allocated to nursing research and development. Besides the NINR improving the recognition and appreciation of nursing research, it further supported clinical and nursing research and research training on health and diseases that have, to date, been instrumental in the development of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing (Pinto et al., 2021).

Question

Step 1 Respond to the following prompts using research and your own personal experience. For this post, you must show research in your writing using in-text citations and format your reference using 7th ed. APA.

Events that Have Shaped the Nursing Profession

Events that Have Shaped the Nursing Profession

Choose an event in the history of nursing that has shaped how the profession of nursing has developed. Because of the nature of this question, sources older than 10 years are allowed.

What event did you choose? Using research, describe your event.
What lead to this event? Be specific.
For example, if you chose the increase in ADN programs in the 1950s as your event, you would describe how the aftermath of WWII led to a shortage of RNs.
In what way did the event change the course or affect the way nursing developed?
Did the event have a positive or negative impact on nursing?
Step 2 Read other students’ posts. Choose two of the other posts that you feel have had an effect on your practice today and respond to them. Peer responses do not require research. If you choose to put in research, your format will not be graded for APA.

Have you heard of this event? Do you agree that this event was significant to nursing development? Why?
Do you agree or disagree with your peer’s evaluation of this event’s impact on nursing?
Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support opinions.
