Evaluating Cognitive Development in Tisha- An Analysis of Piagets Stages and Developmental Milestones

The vignette presents a child, Tisha, who is in the symbolic function substage of Piaget’s preoperational stage of cognitive development in children. The symbolic stage occurs between the ages of 2 and 7. It is a developmental stage characterized by the use of symbols to relay their thought processes. Children will use symbolic gestures to represent images, words, or ideas at this stage. It is also the stage at which language use commences in children (Marwaha, 2017). The child can also represent an absent object and exhibits little dependence on their perception in the ability to solve problems.

Tisha is meeting the expectations of this stage. All the actions exhibited by the client are consistent with the theoretical provisions of this substage of cognitive development. Tisha is reported to be having an increased struggle with her emotions and behaviors. Her parents report that she forces her way into things and that she refuses to listen. While at the social worker’s office, she is reported to have explored the toys and even engaged in aggressive play with people’s figures. According to Piaget’s developmental theory, a child at this stage of development is likely to use symbols to represent her thought process. They may also exhibit dependence on their perception of problem-solving abilities as well as represent absent objects with symbols (Tyler, 2022). Tisha’s action may be attributable to her perception of problem-solving as well as her utilization of symbols to represent whatever she perceives to be absent in her life.

Tisha exhibits some evidence of delay in her cognitive development. As much as her actions may be aligned to the theoretical provision of this developmental stage, her marked aggressive actions may indicate cognitive-developmental lapses. Her abnormal behaviors may be attributable to her reduced ability to accurately represent her thought processes as well as the inappropriate perception of her problem-solving ability. The history of her parents also reveals drug abuse during her pregnancy. Maternal substance abuse has been implicated in significant retardation in cognitive development among children and adolescents (Guille & Aujla, 2019). This may have impacted her baby’s cognitive development.
