Ethical Principles and Standards Genie Wiley Discussion
Psychological research is guided by specific principles and guidelines outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA). The principles help guide researchers to navigate ethical issues and dilemmas that may arise in clinical research (Navab et al., 2016). Violation of the principles may result in legal liabilities for researchers: the five primary principles of psychological research include autonomy, beneficence and non-maleficence, justice, and a relationship of trust (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2013). Application of the principles may vary depending on the type and scope of research. The case of Genie Wiley presents an example of the importance of following ethical guidelines in psychological research.
The first ethical principle relevant to Genie’s case is beneficence and non-maleficence. The principle requires psychologists to safeguard the welfare and rights of those they interact with and minimize harm (American Psychological Association, 2017). In the case of Genie, the principal was critical as she was recovering from thirteen years of abuse. Another ethical principle relevant to Genie’s case is fidelity and responsibility. The principle obligates psychologists to foster positive relationships with their clients (American Psychological Association, 2017). In Genie’s case, it was vital for the researchers to establish a relationship of trust to help her feel safe and responsive to the intervention treatments. The case also highlights the ethical issue of relationship boundaries. The psychologists handling Genie were sued by her guardian for getting too close. It thus points out that the researchers violated ethical provisions of research boundaries. Genie’s case can be compared to classic examples like the Stanford Prison Simulation and the Milgram shock experiment, which are considered unethical due to the use of deception. As in the case of Genie, an important ethical consideration in the experiment was beneficence and non-maleficence. However, unlike in the Stanford Prison study and the Milgram experiment, researchers in Genie’s case did not use deception as they did in the other two mentioned studies.

Watch the video on Genie Wiley. What ethical considerations do you think apply to the research conducted on Genie (consider the APA’s ethical principles and standards when answering)? Compare and contrast these ethical considerations to the ones most relevant to the classic examples of ethically dubious psychological research: the Stanford Prison simulation and Milgram’s learning experiments.
