Ethical Challenges of Working in Modern Organizations

Ethical Challenges of Working in Modern Organizations

Working for almost any organization may be ethically troubling due to the competitive nature of the business environment and the need for personal and professional growth. The competitive nature of the business environment pushes organizations to consider the approaches they can take to create and maintain a competitive advantage. Some of the approaches may be unethical, but they yield long-term positive results, thus making them acceptable to the organization. Unfortunately, when organizations act unethically, employees are forced to embrace unethical practices to retain their jobs. For example, an organization may use false advertising to attract customers by providing false information about what a product does or the ingredients of a product, which forces the marketing team to also act unethically by promoting the false advertisements to secure their jobs and play their role of helping the organization attract more customers and increase sales. Such instances are common among cosmetics companies that lie about the effectiveness of their products in skin lightening and removing black spots and pimples to get ahead of the many competitors in the beauty industry.

On the other hand, the need for personal and professional growth makes it ethically troubling to work for almost any organization because of conflicts of interest. Conflicts of interest include a convergence between a person’s private relationships, obligations, or interests and their professional obligations to a company (Garattini & Padula, 2019). According to Brusseau (2012), it is extremely hard to walk away from a conflict of interest without getting stained. For example, if an employee gets a gift from a customer for providing good services, professionalism may be compromised, resulting in a conflict between personal welfare and obligation. Conflicts of interest are also hard to avoid in the work environment because employees seek opportunities to grow personally and professionally, thus leveraging every opportunity they get and seeking ways to avoid getting discovered when they put their personal welfare and interests ahead of the organization’s interest.
