A prevalent Immigrant population in the state of Illinois

The number of immigrants in the state of Illinois is growing each year. The majority of the immigrants in Illinois are Mexicans and Indians. It is estimated that one in every seven people in Illinois is an immigrant (Efford, 2021). More than one in every six employees in the state of Illinois is an immigrant. Apart from work, immigrants in the state of Illinois are businessmen and women in towns (Efford, 2021). The immigrants support Illinois State in many ways, such as through food production and the manufacture of computers. They contribute to the growth of the economy through business, working, and paying taxes. In 2018, Illinois State had more the 79856 immigrant children, 866951 immigrant women, and 844506 immigrant men (Efford, 2021). Illinois had more than 1.8 immigrants from foreign countries. 14% of the total population in Illinois State are immigrants from other countries (Efford, 2021). Although Illinois state benefits from immigrants, the state is at high risk of having a measles outbreak due to the increased number of immigrants in the state.

Demographic Information

The Mexicans are the prevalent immigrant population in Illinois State, followed by Indians. More than 36 % of the immigrants in Illinois are Mexicans (Kordi, 2020).In terms of education, 33% of the immigrants had a degree and above, while 25% had a high school diploma or less (Kordi, 2020). Most of the immigrants from Mexico are undocumented, where 22% of the Mexican immigrants were undocumented family members. It is estimated that the percentage of Mexicans in Illinois increases by 50% every ten years, which in turn increases the percentage of Mexican Americans (Kordi, 2020). More than 58000 Mexicans live in Illinois, where they work as business people and workers (Kordi, 2020). Ideally, as years go by, the number of immigrants, especially Mexicans in Illinois, is increasing.

Communicable diseases that affect the population at a disproportionate rate

Currently, COVID-19 is a communicable disease that affects a disproportionate rate of the Mexican population. The COVID-19 pandemic affected a lot of Latinos and Hispanics, where more than 106000 died from the pandemic (Burki, 2020). Therefore, people traveling from Mexico could easily transmit COVID-19 in Illinois State (Burki, 2020). The other communicable disease among Mexicans that is highly contagious is hepatitis. Hepatitis is spread through blood, and therefore, people are required to be vaccinated. Rabies, Dengue fever, and Malaria are also common communicable diseases among Mexicans (Ana, 2019). Tuberculosis and typhoid fever attack most Hispania and Latinos and, therefore, are also common among Mexicans. These communicable diseases can easily spread in Illinois State if protective measures are not put in place.

Literature review of communicable diseases among Mexicans

Burki (2020) focused on infectious diseases in Latin America with more emphasis on Mexico and Brazil. According to Burki, COVID-19 was highly infectious in Mexico and other Latin American countries due to factors such as increased rates of diabetes and hypertension (Burki, 2020). Burki also stated that there had been serious outbreaks of Zika, dengue fever, chikungunya, and yellow fever in Mexico and other countries in Latin America (Burki, 2020). Isolation of the case and vaccination were the best strategies identified to deal with the diseases. García-Sepúlveda, Laguna-Meraz, and Panduro (2020) found that more than 45% of young adults and adolescents were resistant to the HBV vaccine, and therefore, the rate of hepatitis was high (García-Sepúlveda, Laguna-Meraz & Panduro, 2020). The majority of Mexican babies do not receive the HBV vaccine, and therefore, the rate of infection among the Mexicans who are not vaccinated is high (García-Sepúlveda, Laguna-Meraz & Panduro, 2020). Adopting HBV vaccination at birth will help to deal with the situation. Based on existing data, Ana (2019) found out that Aedes aegypti and dengue were the most distributed diseases in Mexico (Ana, 2019). Cases of rabies and cholera were also on the rise among Mexicans. Ana also reported Tuberculosis and influenza to be common among the Mexicans (Ana, 2019). Early detection and management of the disease help deal with infections. These studies indicate that the most common communicable diseases among Mexicans are COVID-19, Hepatitis, dengue fever, rabies, Tuberculosis, and cholera. These diseases can spread to other nations when immigrants are not well screened and treated.
