ELEVATOR SPEECH TEMPLATE
Hello, my name is [Name], and I am a [Role, e.g., Registered Nurse or Nursing Student] at [Place of Employment or University]. In that capacity, most of my collaboration with patients had to do with chronic illnesses, mental health-related conditions, and those needing access to palliative care. Being able to achieve comprehensive healthcare could be the greatest way to assist in improving both patient outcomes as well as working to reduce health care costs globally: ELEVATOR SPEECH TEMPLATE.
ATTENTION GRABBER: Imagine having a serious medical condition yet not being able to receive the care one needs simply because of an inability to pay. House Bill H.R. 3421, the “Medicare for All Act of 2023,” seeks to change that by making sure all Americans have access to universal healthcare (Jayapal, 2023).
TALKING POINTS:
#1 – Universal healthcare decreases overall healthcare spending by eliminating all administrative burdens of private insurance while ensuring that all are able to receive the medical attention they need. Evidence from other countries shows that those with universal care spend less per capita on health care yet achieve better health outcomes (Wager & Cox, 2024).
#2 – Lack of access to healthcare affects many vulnerable populations, from low-income families to those suffering from chronic conditions to residents of rural areas. An estimated 8.8 % of the residents in Alabama remain uninsured and face preventable hospitalizations and growing healthcare disparities (Rocha, 2023).
#3 – Universal healthcare will provide good public health and increase preventive care. It can be made possible by guaranteed access to such services as regular screenings and early interventions that decrease the burden of chronic diseases and avoid costly visits to the emergency room.
OUTCOME: I urge you to support H.R. 3421 and work toward universal healthcare access. We can create a system that truly puts patient care over profits, reduces disparities, and improves the health and well-being of all Alabamians.
QUESTION TO END WITH: Would you be willing to meet with healthcare professionals like myself to discuss how universal healthcare could benefit our community?
Thank you for your time and dedication to improving healthcare policy.

Remember…
- Remember you are the expert in your nursing role. Legislators have less knowledge about healthcare than a student and/or a nurse. You know what you know; they don’t know what you know.
- You are delivering a specific message – be focused!

ELEVATOR SPEECH TEMPLATE
DEVELOP AN ATTENTION GRABBER: Catchy first phrase or statement – intrigues listener and prompts ongoing communication. This statement should effectively address the chosen issue of interest (listed above) you have analyzed that relates to your current professional nursing role. Please make sure you provide the House or Senate bill number and name.
CLOSING/WRAP UP: Restate the attention grabber, share an anecdote, or ask questions to prompt future interactions
Write out your elevator speech and practice before you deliver it (use the template below required to develop your speech). Once you’ve written your elevator speech, read it aloud several times to decide what is unclear, not succinct, or sounds too formal. Make changes as needed.
- Let your enthusiasm and passion for the issue be seen and heard
- Speak naturally, confidently and in a clear, audible tone of voice
- Stay focused on the purpose
- Do not use medical jargon – the legislator or others may not know healthcare terms
- End your pitch with a question to spark additional conversation. Examples:
- Can I meet with you when you are back in our district?
- Can I talk to you at the next local legislative forum you host in our community?
- What additional information can I send or share with you?
Leave a Positive Impression:
- Message Consistency + Repetition = Impact
- Deliver the message by controlling the agenda
- Be polite, positive, and proactive
