Elements of Critical Thinking
According to Elder (2022), critical thinking is the ability to think rationally and clearly. The five elements of critical thinking that I found in the reading material were logical reasoning, analyzing, fair-mindedness, knowledge transformation, and intellectual courage. Analyzing includes breaking down one part into smaller parts to determine their relationship. Logical reasoning includes drawing conclusions that are justified or supported by evidence (Markovits, 2020). Fair-mindedness includes having a realization of the need to treat all viewpoints the same without referring to one’s vested interests or feelings. Knowledge transformation includes converting or changing the form, nature or condition of concepts among contexts. Intellectual courage includes having a realization of the need to fairly address and face ideas, viewpoints, or beliefs toward which a person has strong negative emotions and to which a person has not been keen on hearing. Good Critical Thinking Skills.
The TED Talk, The End of Globalization (and the Beginning of Something New), by Michael O’Sullivan, illustrates good critical thinking skills. The speaker talks about the evolution of globalization since the second wave of globalization that began in the early 90s. The speaker states that we are at the end of globalization because people have misdirected the advantages of globalization. The speaker demonstrated good critical thinking by using logical reasoning to support his arguments and being fair-minded. For instance, the author demonstrates logical reasoning by using examples of the impact of globalization in different countries, such as Europe and China, to explain the situations leading to the end of globalization.
Absence of Good Critical Thinking Skills.
The TED Talk, Thought Leader, by Pat Kelly illustrates a lack of good critical thinking skills. The speaker discusses the attributes of a thought leader based on his interaction with thought leaders. The speaker demonstrates the absence of critical thinking because he does not stick to the topic of his talk but instead provides a lot of irrelevant and unnecessary information to make his audience laugh. The speaker also seems to have no idea about thought leadership because his story of how he became a thought leader does not relate to how he became a thought leader.
