Effects of Divorce on Children
Divorce is among the issues debated worldwide due to its impact on society. The issue is viewed from two perspectives. Those against divorce argue that it hurts the people involved and those around them. Those for divorce argue that the purpose of human life is to be happy hence the need to walk away from situations and relationships that deny a person happiness. One issue that has increased the technicality in determining whether divorce should be encouraged is its impact on children. Although divorce may be the best option to resolve issues among couples, children suffer the most because divorce has a long-term impact on their emotional, psychological, and social development and transition to adulthood. According to Eyo (175), divorce affects children psychologically because they feel detached from their normal environment, including peers and friends, especially when their friends and peers discuss family life and parents. A child’s social environment includes interacting with other children and sharing exciting moments. Therefore, conversations about their parents and family are likely to occur during their interactions. Children from divorced families may feel left out when they do not have anything to share about their family life and parents. They may also feel ashamed to tell their friends and peers that their parents are divorced to avoid being viewed as a child from a broken family. Therefore, divorce may cause psychological issues such as stress among children. Stress is linked to negative emotions such as anger and depression, which could have a long-term impact on the child’s well-being. Therefore, children from divorced companies are likely to engage in fights in school and turn to substance abuse.
Divorce interrupts a child’s social setting, thus interfering with the child’s social development. When parents divorce, children are forced to relocate to another place where they have to start looking for new friends, thus disrupting their social life. Divorce also disrupts the relationship between children and their parents. According to Fagan and Churchill (3), divorce weakens the relationship between children and their parents because of limited support from home. The authors argue that children from divorced families receive less financial, emotional, and practical support from their parents. Divorce also makes it hard for parents to trust their relationship due to limited interaction. Trust issues may also be caused by the cause of the divorce, such as infidelity, mismanagement of the family’s finances, and domestic violence. The trust issues may have a long-term impact on the child and affect their interaction with peers and friends because they are reluctant to trust anyone.
According to Karake (27), divorce leads to a premature transition to adulthood, such as leaving home or parenting their child at an early age. Many children from divorced families are likely to be deviant, leading to conflict with their parents. Such conflicts may make the child consider running away from home, thus transitioning to adulthood early because when they run away from their families, they begin taking care of themselves. Alcohol and substance abuse among children from divorced families may also lead to early transitioning to adulthood, especially if a child gets pregnant. In most instances, divorced parents may have difficulty controlling their children, especially if the child wants to live with the other parent, leading to child neglect which could increase the likelihood of leaving home.
