Divine Love and Human Suffering- Reassessing Worldviews in the Face of Evil

Divine Love and Human Suffering- Reassessing Worldviews in the Face of Evil

Foremost, across the theological divide, humanity is responsible for what beset him in the Garden of Eden. Inasmuch as there are dissenting voices in these circles, the first sin that Adam and Eve committed was a sin that literally cut them off from God; it also ruined their nature of sheer love and compassion. Therefore, it suffices to say that man had a choice not to sin from the start. After expulsion from the Garden of Eden, mankind was made to toil to get food from the ground (“Bible Gateway passage: Genesis 3:22-24 – Good News Translation”, n.d.). Therefore, as time progressed, man began coveting what other men had and lust and grew into more sin. As such, God allowed tragedies that happen today, such as tremendous earthquakes and pestilences, to occur to bring us back to Him. It is a wake-up call. Secondly, when it comes to why God allows the suffering of his people and much evil in his creation, what comes to mind is that he allows suffering because he wants Christians to have faith in Him that he will work things out for them. Also, by allowing suffering to happen, he wants people to hope for another world, another life with peace, love, and prosperity, and that place can never be this world (Torrance, 1961). As such, God wants people to have hope for another “Jerusalem.”

Lastly, from the events that are happening in the world today, from earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and even the pandemic, my perspective of the world is that the problems and challenges we face today will never cease. When a solution to something is found, another problem will often arise. And all challenges will never be solved.
