Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity

Diversity refers to the collection of all the differences and overall similarities brought to the workplace by individuals. Diversity is a broad concept covering age, gender, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic standards, personality, and education. However, diversity is not limited to only these dimensions (Roberson, 2019). It can touch on many items that individuals at the workplace consider to be important in their lives. Some of these aspects can have more importance than others. For instance, Cletus et al. (2018) note that race and gender are considered important dimensions of diversity and bear more weight on a person’s day-to-day workplace experience. One important thing to note is that diversity is required to thrive in the workplace. Notably, for diversity dimensions to thrive, there is a need for inclusion in the work environment. According to Sparkman (2019), inclusion entails a work environment where all people feel important, and respected, and have a sense of belonging or what is referred to as a “place at the table.” Organizations need to ensure all their employees feel like to are part of the institution for productivity to be enhanced.

When there is a high level of inclusion in an organization, there is an opportunity for workers to consider themselves stakeholders in the organization. Further, they feel a sense of belonging because they will feel part of the organization through their opinions, a true sense of ownership, and that their voices play a part in the decision-making process (Scarborough et al., 2019). When diversity thrives through inclusion, the equity factor comes into play. According to Livingston (2020), equity is a situation where fairness and impartiality are prominent. Equity comes into play in the workplace when employees feel they are treated equally. Thus, they work together as a team towards organizational goals.
