Diversity in an Educational Community
Cultural diversity, inseparably linked with democracy, creates a favorable environment for cultural exchanges and the flowering of creative abilities that nurture the life forces of society. As diverse is educational diversity in life, so should the classroom. We must give each one the tools and support necessary to be oneself in the time that they have lived. For a long time, traditional educational models have been based on the uniformity of programs, which a similar student with homogeneous results intended. Equality marked the demands on performance and made the students more unequal and unequal every day, cataloging and associating inequalities and educational needs in the field of the pathological. Faced with these inequalities, the idea arises that diversity is consubstantial to human life, contributing to its enrichment.
Educating in diversity means thinking about a school created for everyone. This school includes differences and excludes inequalities, a school that fosters non-exclusive social possibilities, and a school that seeks to give each one the most valuable and beneficial to achieve an advance in its growth based on what it is and where it is located. To educate in diversity is to believe in the human being, in which whatever the condition of each one, we all have a place to occupy in the society that we have to live, with the same dignity and rights. To make an inclusive school, a school of attention to diversity, we must believe in the principle that sustains it: The difference, in itself, enriches human life and generates complementarity; what is impoverishing is that this “being different” converges in inequality, lack of equity and social injustice. Diversity is, therefore, one of the characteristics of the behavior and condition of the human being, which manifests itself both in the behavior and in the way of life of the people, as well as in their ways and ways of thinking. This diversity is evident in the classrooms and in the students that make them up.
