Distillation

Distillation

There is a metaphor on page 134 (hint: near the top of the second column “…crossing that would reach…all that it enveloped.”) Write the metaphor below.

The day, a vast blue balloon stretched to its limits by a great flood of light contained us and invited our blinking eyes to examine all it enveloped.

Making inferences: Why does garbage in the neighborhood not exist on page 135?

Garbage sanitation workers collected the garbage and were sheltered against fences or walls.

Making is: Why are the boys still and silent on page 136?

The boys could not tell what was appropriate to say because they knew their father was under too much pressure to navigate out of the curve surrounded by grasses, wildflowers, weeds, and trees. He was also being chased and became more anxious whenever he looked backward. Initially, they had tried to urge their father on by telling him to push the wagon faster, but their father gradually slowed until he seemed to be moving at half speed.

Dynamic Characters – on page 136: How does the word glows suggest that the narrator has grown or changed since the time of these events? “Years have changed this are in many ways, but that landscape, like a photo negative glows in memory’s light.”

The word glows suggests that the narrator has changed over time based on the assumption that when a photo negative is exposed to light, it brings out the image taken, thus transforming the negative image. In the same way, the narrator has changed since the time of the events due to exposure to various experiences over the years that bring out another side of himself.

Imagery – on page 138: What creature does the father resemble here? “With a powerful jerk, he pulled it up his back and over his head, held out his arms like wings, and we instinctively darted under.”

The statement depicts the father as a chicken shielding its chicks from danger. As the statement describes, a chicken spreads its wings to cover its chicks in imminent danger and exposes its back to the threat so that no chick is harmed.

Symbolism –threat 140: The wounds the father sustains in protecting his children reinforce what type of symbolism? Can you think of what allusion this could reference?

The wounds reinforce a metaphor. It could reference the illusion of making sacrifices for the children even though the sacrifices cause suffering because he is responsible for caring for them.

Is responsible for takings: Is the character of the narrator dynamic or static? Explain your reasoning.

The narrator’s character is dynamic because the encounters he experiences throughout the story change him. During the journey, the narrator seemed naïve and looked up to his father for help. He did not take up any responsibilities, but towards the end of the trip, he took up duties such as guarding the wagon. Tripod learns fromdutiesather and uses some of his known things, such as how to tie down the tarp, to help him understand things. He also helps his father by pushing the wagon and staying determined to move it despite falling and slipping while making it. The story’s ending also suggests that the events the narrator went through during the journey described in the story changed his approach to embarking on new journeys.

Use each “Words to Own” in a sentence at the bottom of each page.

Sitting in my room enjoying my spoils, I saw my roommate glower. I imagined the myriad of evil thoughts in my. I imagined becoming taut because the feeling galvanized fear, making me tentative to lessen my involvement in helping her get her livid boyfriend out of the eclipsed room, the reduced zenith of our cottage at the center of the Islet.
