Discussion Response – Parental Guidance on Alcohol – The Pros and Cons of Teaching Responsible Drinking

Hello,
Thank you for your post. I agree with you that parents who educate their children on responsible drinking create a safe space where the children feel comfortable opening up about their experiences with alcohol or even any questions they may have regarding the drug. Further, this education also helps keep the children safe from the dangers of alcohol consumption. For instance, educating a child on things like alcohol poisoning and what to do not only to prevent it but also the measures one should take in case it happens. Further, you were right in pointing out that educating children about responsible drinking does have a downside, whereby they may get more curious about the drug and want to try it while still so young.
I appreciate your optimism about the prevention of teenage substance use and the possibility of significantly lowering the risk variables. Reducing risk factors for adolescent substance abuse is a complex endeavor but certainly possible with targeted interventions and strategies. I agree with you that prevention efforts involving a combination of approaches, including education, community-based programs, parental involvement, policy changes, and early intervention for at-risk individuals could be effective.
Lastly, I concur that drug-free schools are almost, if not impossible, to achieve. At that age, teenagers are exploring and developing their identities, which might lead to some pushing limits and trying out dangerous actions. Many factors contribute to whether an adolescent will engage in substance use, including biological, psychological, social, and environmental influences. As you’ve mentioned, children do mimic the behaviors in their environments. Unfortunately, there is a drug crisis in America (Ayoo, Mikhail, Huang & Wąsowicz, 2020), indicating that drug use is prevalent in most of the settings these teenagers grow up in, which then increases their chances of using the drugs. To minimize the harm caused by drug use on adolescents, I would use prevention efforts targeting adolescent substance abuse that consider the various risk factors and aim to address them comprehensively. This approach would include addressing underlying risk factors and promoting protective factors such as supportive family relationships, positive peer influences, and coping skills, it’s possible to reduce the likelihood of adolescents engaging in substance abuse. Finally, I also agree with you that due to their severe health risks as well as a high probability of getting addicted, tobacco and alcohol should be included in the definition of drug-free.

1. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of parents teaching their children to drink responsibly?
Parents who teach their children about drinking responsibly open the lines of communication with them, they may be more willing to discuss things that may have taken place already or things that they may be presented with at a later point in time.

Providing a child with education on the topic may reduce the risk of them abusing alcohol and teach them the limits of self-control. They may have a better understanding of their actions and the consequences that may follow them. On the downside, teaching them responsible drinking may cause them to experiment earlier in life, as they may see drinking as normal, which could lead to unhealthy habits. Teaching is good, but to what extent an approach is taken on the subject is something that should be considered.
