The Project Management Life Cycle (PMLC) in more current and modern practices of project management is greatly impacted by faster delivery, flexibility, increased productivity, and uncertainty, among other things. The mentioned factors/characteristics have a significant effect on the initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closing phases of projects. The increasing stress being placed on fast delivery in project management is primarily due to competitive market factors and technological advancement. More often than not, projects are to be finished under much tighter schedules to satisfy the needs of the clients and the market. Such a scenario may turn the PMLC into a more adaptive one where incremental processes make it possible to quickly deliver aspects of a project within the project life cycle. For instance, in software development, approaches like Agile (Burmistrov et al., 2018) encourage contributing working portions of the software in short cycles to allow teams to redefine priorities without losing progress.

Increased Productivity

Often, an increase in productivity is due to the adoption of good project management practices (Golini et al., 2015). This is because project teams can accomplish more in a given period of time by improving procedures and using tools that foster collaboration and communication. The PMLC enhances productivity by defining distinct phases and their associated deliverables aimed at directing the team’s efforts. For instance, the implementation of a project management system reduces time wastage on task allocation and status updates, thereby increasing productivity.

Uncertainty

Every undertaking carries a degree of uncertainty, but it is even more pronounced today. The uncertainty can be attributed to factors such as economic changes, technological advancement, and customers’ behavioral changes. The PMLC process is expected to include approaches for managing risks at every stage to reduce the possible effects these may have on the project objectives. For example, conducting frequent risk monitoring and evaluation during the monitoring phase allows project management to recognize new threats and adopt countermeasures (Glette-Iversen et al., 2023).

Flexibility

While the PMLC approach offers several considerations, flexibility stands out as the most important factor. A fast-changing and uncertainly complex situation where innovation is required will demand a change in how plans and processes are implemented. Along with flexibility, speed of delivery also comes in handy since it is in line with the market needs. The need for higher output also comes in since it is important for the team to deliver within the timelines given. Notably, while uncertainty cannot be eliminated, strategies for managing risks within the PMLC will help in reducing the degree of the impacts caused by this uncertainty.

In conclusion, the management of any type of innovative project doesn’t go without challenges and other complexities, hence having a great understanding of the relationship between the PMLC stages and elements such as faster delivery, flexibility, productivity, and uncertainty. It is possible to apply techniques of project management to change the project so as to promote fuller flexibility. In this way, for example, it is worthwhile to increase the likelihood of attaining positive project outcomes, particularly in the face of significant change.
