Discussion 1
The Application of the Downward Causation Model in Holistic Health
Holistic health involves healing, focusing on the holism of the body, mind, and spirit to ensure health (Eliopoulos RN, ND, Ph.D., MPH, 2017). Initially, holistic health was associated with innovative therapies such as meditation, faith healing, reflexology, vigorous and sensitive massages, hand laying, and many other practices (Kopelman and Moskop, 1981). All these practices are employed to ensure the health of the holism of an individual’s body, mind, and spirit. Therefore, the classical way of describing holistic health involves the healthcare practices that ensure the health of all individuals’ components: the mind, body, and spirit.
The downward causation model is also referred to as the top-down model. The phenomenon of this model is illustrated as causation in one component results in causation in another component of the exact mechanism. Downward causation involves applying causation in a whole mechanism to observe changes in parts of the mechanism (Kistler, 2009).
Accordingly, downward causation redefines holistic health as the healing that begins with healing the wholeness of an organism that results in the healing of other organism components. Subsequently, healing the wholeness of an organism involves the healing of the holism of an ailing individual, comprising of body, mind, and spirit, which will ensure the healing of ailing parts by restoring the balance of energies, thereby promoting health.

Discussion 2
Self-Care in the Balance between Technological Advancements and Nature
Holistic health is influenced by a couple of factors, including the immediate environment of an individual. Subsequently, nature, which plays a part in the immediate environment, influences holistic health because it influences the energy balance in the wholeness of an individual. Accordingly, with advancements in technology, people move away from nature, initiating an imbalance in the energies of the wholeness of an individual interfering with their health. Technological advancements also include industrialization, which contributes to an increase in processed foods. Subsequently, to balance the exposure to technological development and nature, individuals must apply self-care to ensure the balance.
Self-care involves self-direction and responsibility to ensure health is either maintained or improved (Wilkinson and Whitehead, 2009). Subsequently, making adjustments to a lifestyle that is dominated by technology will ensure an individual’s health. These adjustments might include a healthy lifestyle from food consumed to exercising, spirituality for proper connection, understanding the meaning of symptoms that warn of diseases, and the use of complementary therapies such as yoga and meditation (Eliopoulos RN, ND, Ph.D., MPH, 2017).
Accordingly, individuals ensure their health by applying self-care and, thereby, introducing a balance between technology and nature. Holistic health involves health in the wholeness of an individual; therefore, healing may be influenced by technological advancements in medical practices and by nature through practices such as comparative strategies. Therefore, self-care influences the development or eradication of diseases (Wilkinson and Whitehead, 2009).
