Discussion: Eugenics

With rapid advancements in all fields, including science, the concept of human cloning is closer is becoming a reality, and this extends to other areas that push the boundaries of what defines a human being. These advancements open up the door to what to means to take up another form of being, or rather, an alien. An example of such an advancement is eugenics, which is basically genetic editing, whereby humans can cut out genes that they deem to be faulty and also replace them with what they consider to be better genes, so that they can upgrade. For example, when an individual is screened for genetic diseases and they are found to have them, eugenics can be applied to help get rid of these genes (Popenoe & Johnson, 2022). Additionally, scientists argue that eugenics can also be applied in enhancing human capabilities like cognitive functions, physical capabilities, and features, among other arguably superior human features (Pavlovic et al., 2018). Eugenics presents the possibility of selective breeding, which is supposed to improve society.

A science fact of eugenics is that there is a tool known as CRISPR-Cas9, which is a gene editing tool that is designed to cut DNA or genes at specific locations, enabling one to replace them or remove them (Li et al., 2023). A science fiction aspect is that in the original story of Deadpool, the main character, Wade Wilson, suffers from terminal cancer, and he volunteered to be a test subject in a scientific lab where gene editing experiments eventually give him the ability to regenerate, making him a superhuman (Chamary, 2018).

Question

The idea of eugenic seems to be ideal as it will help humans get rid of undesired traits like diseases and possibly disabilities. Further, it can be used to help improve or unlock the full capabilities of human beings. However, there is a possibility that humans in pursuit of desired traits may aim to eliminate what we tend to consider undesired based on our biases, for example, dark skin. Also, there is a possibility that a natural human who will prefer not to undergo any kind of eugenic enhancement might be perceived as unequal, creating a divide between the two sides. Do the pros of eugenics outweigh the cons?
