Discussion – Discretionary Benefits

Discussion – Discretionary Benefits

Fitzpatrick et al. (2013) define discretionary benefits as employee benefits that are not required by law. The main components of this type of benefit are paid time off, protection programs, and services. Protection programs include disability insurance and retirement programs. Toyota company is among the organizations that offer disability insurance and retirement programs. The company has a Pension Plan that provides pension and retirement benefits to employees. The company also offers disability insurance which is accessible to all employees in its branches (Comparably, 2021). Paid time off includes allowing employees to spend some time away from the workplace. It may include vacations and maternity leaves. Apple has created a culture of motivating employees through paid time off through vacations, which are covered under the company’s PTO and vacation policy that guarantees employees 20 to 30 days off a year (Comparably, 2021). The company also allows expectant mothers to take a leave of up to four weeks before giving birth and 14 weeks after. The maternity leave may either be paid or unpaid. The company also allows other non-birth parents and fathers to take paid leaves lasting for six weeks.

Employee services may include relocation benefits and child care. Relocation benefits incorporate the shipment of household goods, while childcare benefits incorporate the provision of an on-site childcare center. One of the organizations that offer on-site child care is Boeing. The company’s on-site childcare facility has a capacity of 208 children and is designed to meet the needs of toddlers, infants, and preschoolers (Boeing, n.d.). It also emphasizes early childhood education. Although most companies have been reluctant to introduce relocation benefits to their employees, others, such as CenturyLink – Lumen, have significantly invested in relocating employees. The company covers employees’ moving costs (Altovita, 2021). The extent of help, however, varies based on job grade level and business needs.
