Description of the Selected Social Justice Brief
The title of the selected brief is “Reimagining Policing: Strategies for Community Reinvestment.” This Social Justice Brief examines the historical origins and modern application of systemic racism within law enforcement agencies. It provides reform government frameworks, such as shifting police funding to services in the communities, incorporating social work in a crisis, and minimizing unwarranted police encounters, particularly in immigrant populations.
Rationale for Selection
I selected this brief due to my belief in justice-based changes that enhance the well-being of marginalized communities. The excessive policing of black and immigrant communities has established a system of public safety model that prioritizes control over care. Police are not social workers, as indicated in the brief. Nevertheless, there is no getting rid of the fact that they remain a de facto reaction to events requiring social work activities (Wilson & Wilson, 2019). This fact necessitates the deployment of trained social workers in mental health and crisis management. The brief is in alignment with my advocacy outcomes in reducing harm in the system and introducing healing by establishing cross-policing and social service collaborative models. I want to contribute to structural change as a future social worker who promotes compassion, equity, and prevention.
Advocating for Change
Based on the analysis in the brief, I would advocate for the redistribution of municipal police budgets to set up community-based crisis teams composed of social workers and behavioral health professionals. I would communicate with local policymakers, rely on the community voices furthered through public forums, and promote legislation on promoting crisis response partnerships. According to Jansson (2017), effective strategies require advocates to form coalitions, generate mass opinion, and consider numerous advocacy forums to advance their offers. Thus, I would liaise with justice-oriented organizations, lobby for policy changes at the city level, and suggest alternatives to the incarceration of nonviolent offenders. Such measures can minimize false arrests, regain confidence, and open the doors to fair types of public safety.
