Discussion – Crime and Investigation

Criminal investigations in the future will be more complex and global than in the past due to technology. Today, criminals from different parts of the world can use technology to collaborate and commit crimes. The dark web makes it easy for criminals to collaborate since they can hide their identities. On the dark web, criminals can share information and resources to execute a crime without revealing their identity. The anonymity makes investigation difficult since investigators need evidence to make an arrest. Moreover, on the dark web, criminals from foreign countries can collaborate to commit crimes in another country (Vogt, 2017, p. 6). For example, criminals in Russia can collaborate to commit a crime in the United States. The situation makes it difficult for law enforcement to make an arrest; since they must consider the extraterritorial regulations and laws. Moreover, investigators must cease using people’s digital devices to gather digital evidence, which is difficult in some cases due to privacy laws.

For example, over the past decades, debit and credit card fraud has been a common problem. Criminals steal consumers’ credit or debit card information and sell it on the dark web to other criminals who use technology to produce fraudulent versions of the card and withdraw funds (Hurlburt, 2017, p. 4). Some criminals duplicate information from credit cards, including customer name, account number, credit limit, and other details. Fraudsters also use technology to create fictitious cards to defraud companies and people (Awoyemi et al., 2017, 9). Investigating credit card fraud is a significant challenge since it mainly occurs on the dark web, where anonymity is a notable feature. Moreover, in many cases, credit card fraud involves different criminals from different countries. Every criminal plays a specific role.

Hence, technology and globalization make investigations more complex than in the past. Investigators should be well-versed in the system and understand how criminals work to gather evidence to solve the problem.
