Discipline
Achieving one’s or an organization’s goal requires people to be disciplined. According to Iannone et al., the term discipline means training, teaching, instructing, and correcting oneself and others (2020) to conduct oneself in a given manner. This conduct may include laws that govern people and moral standards either set by a society or oneself, which must be followed. Consistently, discipline can be expressed in terms of orderliness, self-control, character development, work efficiency, and ethics. Furthermore, there are two forms of discipline and punishment that aid in nurturing discipline.
There are two forms of discipline. They include positive discipline and negative discipline (Iannone et al., 2020). Positive discipline is a form of discipline in which punishment is not considered a consequence. Accordingly, training or instructing occurs without the threat of punishment, thereby resulting in positive discipline, whereby people conduct themselves with discipline out of their own accord. In contrast, negative discipline is a form of discipline in which punishment is considered a consequence. In many cases, negative discipline is put in place after positive discipline fails (Iannone et al., 2020). Further, the punishment varies with the indiscipline, with some punishments being more severe than others.
Punishments have various effects on an individual being punished. The effects include frustration, negativity, and hostility, leading to more undisciplined conduct, all of which will affect an organization’s performance (Iannone et al., 2020). In addition, previously punished people may develop techniques never to be discovered again. However, being reprimanded and punished will prevent people from repeating the same mistakes in some cases.
Consequently, there are several requisites of punishment. They include being fair, consistent, swift, certain, and curbing others’ indiscipline (Iannone et al., 2020). Of all these requisites, I think the most effective is fairness because fairly punishing all individuals with misconduct without bias will set a tone that all individuals in an organization will maintain. Consistently, punishment is necessary when other forms of discipline appear to be less effective.
