Difference Between a Research Objective and A Research Problem

Difference Between a Research Objective and A Research Problem

Research objectives describe what a study intends to achieve. Researchers use research objectives as a guide during the research process, including the data collection process, the development of arguments within the research, and the development of the study’s conclusion. According to Burns et al. (2016), research objectives should specify where the researcher intends to get data from and the data that will be collected. For example, a research objective can be used to determine the impact of monetary incentives on employee motivation in the construction industry. On the other hand, a research problem focuses on introducing the importance of the topic being studied in the research project. The research problem also provides a clue about the research’s direction in placing the study in a particular context and defining the research limitations. A research problem also provides the framework that the researcher will use to report the study findings and indicate the need to conduct the research. According to Kumari (2022), research problems are categorized into descriptive, difference, relational, and causal problems. The nature of the research problem influences the research method used in a study.

The main difference between a research problem and an objective is that a research problem is a broad problem that the researcher would like to solve through the study. Consequently, a research objective clearly states what the researcher aims to achieve through the study. Another difference is that the research problem identifies a difficult area of concern that should be investigated, whereas a research objective is a specific action that the researcher will take and consider as a milestone in completing the research. Another difference is that researchers focus on only one research problem, whereas research objectives could be more than one in one research study.
