Development of a Career Plan

Development of a Career Plan

A career plan is a practical strategy that guides an individual through their professional life by helping them determine their skills and interests, set career goals, and make an action plan that will help them achieve the goals; a way of mapping out a professional future. It spans from identifying fields you are interested in and devising a strategy for career success.

A career planning process involves eight concepts. First is discovering potential career options by asking relatives, colleagues, and friends about their jobs and companies they work in (Stephen, 2020). Second, is discovering the growing job markets that have the highest professional potential. The third concept is identifying careers that match one’s soft and hard skills. Understanding the career qualifications is also a key concept that helps one understand the requirements of the profession of interest. Assessment of salaries and other benefits like perks that are suitable to you will be part of the career plan. Comparing possible career paths is part of the career plan since it keeps one open-minded and helps one see whether the career options match one’s core values. The development of SMART goals, specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-conscious, is another crucial concept of career development. The last concept is developing a career action plan, which involves reviewing the set goals and the steps you need to follow to get your dream career.

The common mistakes that people make when developing a career plan include a lack of focus, not involving other people like mentors, and over-idealizing their goals without taking action (Bolano, 2018).
