Determinants of Health
Previous feelings towards medicine can influence Sally’s decision on whether she wants to comply with the recommended treatment or do nothing and ignore the diagnosis. Since Sally only visits a physician on an as-needed basis due to the belief that doctors are after money, she is also likely to have negative feelings toward medications. Patients who mistrust physicians are more likely to have negative attitudes toward medications. As shown by Du et al. (2020), the likelihood of patients not adhering to treatment is high when they have previous negative feelings towards medications. This implies that Sally’s mistrust of physicians might have made her have negative feelings towards medicines, and she is more likely not to adhere to the prescribed treatment when diagnosed with any condition. Therefore, in this case, she is more likely to ignore the diagnosis and not comply with the recommended treatment. However, her past experiences with medications when visiting doctors on an as-needed basis may also influence her decision. In addition, patients who experience side effects from medications are less likely to adhere to medications, as noted by Gast & Mathes (2019). Therefore, Sally might fail to comply with the recommended treatment if she had experienced side effects from medications she was previously prescribed. On the other hand, if she found the medications beneficial when she needed them, she could decide to comply with the recommended treatment to feel better.

Question
For this discussion, please use the following scenario as a guide to explain Sally’s determinants of health.
“Sally feels as though she is a moderately healthy 45-year-old person. She does not smoke, drinks occasionally exercise regularly, and visits her physician only on an as-needed basis because she feels doctors are only in business to make money. After a recent cold Sally visited her primary care doctor as she felt it was taking longer than usual to get over the cold. At a second follow-up visit, her physician gave her startling news – Sally has a chronic illness that is not allowing her body to get rid of the cold. Sally must decide if she wants to comply with the recommended treatment or do nothing and ignore the diagnosis.”
