D025 Task 1 ISBAR Summary Template

Public Leader’s Name and Title: (Dr. Daniel P. Edney, the State Health Officer of the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH))

(I) Identify Self

My name is [Your Name], and I am an advanced practice nurse. I am ambitious in reducing health disparities and enhancing population health in Mississippi: D025 Task 1 ISBAR Summary Template.

(S) Situation

One health issue of concern in Mississippi is obesity, with the rate being 41 % among adults as opposed to 32% nationally (CDC, 2022). This high prevalence increases the incidence of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and heart disease, especially among people experiencing poverty and the societies underprivileged.

(B) Background

Studies show that Mississippians have poor dietary habits, lack of exercise, and high incidences of poverty as potential causes of obesity. The CDC’s High Obesity Program (HOP) is an evidence-based effort aimed at partnering with local entities to ensure effective community interventions that comprise nutrition interventions, promotional changes in physical activity, and enhancement of knowledge on health. Other States have implemented such programs with similar effects on obesity rates and the community’s general health.

(A) Assessment

The HOP strategy can effectively lower obesity in Mississippi by promoting healthy eating and physical activity and improving health literacy. By tackling obesity from its source, the program decreases the chance of developing chronic diseases, decreases expenditure on health, and enhances the well-being of people in Mississippi.

(R) Recommendation

Since the goal is to launch the CDC’s High Obesity Program, I propose that Dr. Daniel P. Edney, the State Health Officer of the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), spearhead the same. Dr. Edney is conversant in the position, qualified to advocate for the required resources and funding, and associated with community support bodies to guarantee program implementation. To ensure the program has the most significant effect on reaching its goal of decreasing obesity within the state, it should involve other schools, community centers, and local health care providers.
