Bullying in Nursing

Bullying has been present for time immemorial. It has affected many professions, and nursing has not been spared. Bullying dates back to the Crimean War but is now more prevalent in the profession. Volunteer nurses were more considered to be important than nurses who worked for pay (Stanley, 2019). The nurses who worked for wages were thus discriminated against because of this. Nursing has the highest rate of bullying than other professions (Ul Hassan et al., 2021). The bullying can be related to jobs or personal issues. Nurses who are bullied are affected, which affects the quality of patient care. Accordingly, it causes stress, job dissatisfaction, medication errors, burnout, and high turnover rates (Ul Hassan et al., 2021).

Impact on Society

One of the most widespread types of hospital violence is bullying in the emergency department (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019). Bullying affects the quality of care, which affects patients. Workplace bullying negatively affects nurses. Approximately 40% of nurses are exposed to bullying, such as intimidation and exclusion (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019). Additionally, bullying causes work-related health issues such as sleep problems, irritability, depression, anxiety, and stress. It also decreases productivity and increases absenteeism (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019). It also results in financial implications for the hospitals involved. They pay for nurses during sick leave and pay consultants to handle the issue (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019). They will also pay for other nurses who replaced the nurses on leave. Finally, it increases nurses’ turnover rates, reducing patient safety (Al-Ghabeesh & Qattom, 2019).

Impact of Society on Bullying

Bullying is a complex social phenomenon that transcends ethnicity, age, and national boundaries. Bullying is a social injustice where individuals are discriminated against based on socioeconomic status, race, religion, and gender. Technological inventions have changed how bullying is done. Bullying is now done on the internet through electronic devices and platforms in social media. Historically, nurses working during the Crimean and American Wars were discriminated against based on volunteering or working for pay.

Individual Framework of Perception

Analyzing bullying in nursing through the aspects of wellness has informed me how to protect myself from bullying better. I can now recognize bullies and the different types of bullying present in society. Moreover, it allows me to better understand the dimensions of wellness and protect myself from such stressful conditions that may affect my mental health.

Field of Profession

Analyzing wellness in my field of profession allows me to identify the causes of bullying in workplaces and implement strategies to reduce workplace bullying and the stress associated with it. It also allows key players in the profession to implement strategies to help and protect victims of bullying from the mental health issues associated with it. Studying wellness will enable the next big topic in my profession since it will educate individuals on healthy coping strategies such as exercises and relaxation techniques.

Interaction with Society

Analyzing wellness adds value to how I interact with individuals in society. I can also understand how global issues or events such as bullying works. An example is promoting relaxation techniques that can help victims of bullying recover from mental health. It can help educate individuals on the effects of bullying on mental health. Another example is that individuals can be taught the different types of bullies and recognize them.

Personal and Professional Goals

Strategies I would use to improve my physical health include healthy exercises, getting enough sleep, and eating a healthy diet. Practicing these healthy habits will also help me achieve my professional goals since I will be working at maximum capacity. I would also manage my mental health by having positive coping strategies such as relaxation and yoga (Al-Shannaq et al., 2021). In addition, I would get the Covid-19 vaccine to protect me from the virus.

Conclusion: Benefits and Challenges

To figure out global issues and strategies to improve wellness, it is important to analyze the four lenses of education: humanities, history, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences. Benefits will include analyzing the history of issues, promoting strategies to improve wellness, and understanding global issues’ causes. The challenges may include cultural differences, financial issues, different social backgrounds, and technological issues.

Conclusion: Adds Value

Analyzing wellness improves interactions at the personal and professional levels. It allows individuals to understand their mental and physical issues and help others understand their problems. Understanding these aspects will enable individuals to be ready for their profession and reflect on ways of coping with similar situations that may reoccur.
