Creating a Word Sort

Creating a Word Sort

A word sort is a technique used for letter-sound relationships and tying word meaning and pronunciation. This is where words are sorted based on particular criteria. For instance, words can be sorted by their first phoneme or topics such as food categories, needs, etc. Bear et al. say word sorting is a powerful tool for students as it helps them make sense of the world; thus, preschool teachers are encouraged to introduce it early enough in learning (84). Sorting games or word-sorting activities have varied advantages for children, especially on physical and cognitive levels. For example, sorting improves children’s organizational skills, which are vital for studying mathematics, and improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills (Armstrong, Cassandra, and Lindsey 37).

Most importantly, sorting allows children to find order and detect differences and similarities among varied objects, ideas, words, and events they encounter. Whenever learners sort words, they participate in the active course of likening, analyzing, contrasting, and searching. In turn, this helps learners consolidate what they are aware of about specific words and make conclusions that they can apply to new terms they meet when reading or spelling during writing, ultimately resulting in language development (Kenanoglu, Dilan, and Munise 75). Therefore, the chosen activity is picture sorting, sorting children’s needs and wants.
