Crafting Effective Interview Questions- Identifying Relevant and Irrelevant Queries for Job Applicants

Crafting Effective Interview Questions- Identifying Relevant and Irrelevant Queries for Job Applicants

Ethics

According to Brusseau (2011), Pertinent questions in an interview test an applicant’s creativity and ability to come up with solutions when faced with problems. The interviewing panel comes up with a hypothetical problem relevant to the job an applicant applied for and asks the applicant how they would deal with a particular situation if they faced the same as they work in the future. Interviewers ask pertinent questions because they differentiate great hires from average ones.

Take the case of a software engineer facing an interviewing panel.  One of the questions the applicant will likely face is, ‘When do you prefer to go on your annual holidays?’ This question is not pertinent because it is not directly related to the job the applicant is interviewing for. The question concerns the employment relationship and terms of work but is not linked to the work of a software engineer. Another non-pertinent question would be ‘Do you prefer working from home or at the company facilities?’ This question is vital to establishing the terms of work for the software engineer, but it is not related to the software engineer’s job. Non-pertinent questions do not offer insights into the applicant’s talents, skills, and abilities to perform the job they are applying for.

On the other hand, pertinent questions test the applicant’s ability to perform the specific job they are applying for. For instance, ‘Can you Illustrate a coding problem you solved in your previous assignment and take us through the procedure?’ is a pertinent question. This question will test the applicant’s problem-solving ability, and the skills relevant to a software engineer’s job (Brusseau, 2011). Pertinent questions offer interviewers an insight into the applicant’s readiness and qualification to do the job they are applying for.
