Ethics are established values and guidelines within a group that govern how individual members behave; ethics help define what is good and right. On the other hand, philosophy is the love for knowledge (Boss, 2019). Ethics vary from one group, community, or society to another as different groups, communities, and societies uphold varying values, beliefs, and cultures. Despite these differences, philosophers developed philosophical concepts to understand ethics. These include the Eastern and Western ethical philosophies. On the one hand, eastern philosophy attempts to define the meaning of life and identify aspects that make life valuable. This ethical philosophy also postulates that ethics or morality is centered on the fact that all life aspects are interconnected; extending moral values to all living organisms results in a peaceful and harmonious society.
On the other hand, western philosophers like Socrates believe wisdom is essential in moral development because knowledge is the foundation of innate happiness (Boss, 2019). Essentially, western philosophers argue ethical behavior or the goodwill in people is driven by self-happiness. Examples of Western philosophy believers include Plato, Hume, Ross, and Bentham. In addition, this philosophical concept focuses on identifying or questioning the truth about people’s beliefs, values, or cultural customs (Boss, 2019).

Despite these differences, the two ethical philosophies are similar; both focus on finding, defining, or explaining the best way human beings can live while being morally upright. Accordingly, eastern philosophy encourages people to focus on others, while Western philosophy encourages people to find innate happiness. Despite the differences in these two approaches, both concepts drive moral behavior in people; self-happiness and focus on others drive goodwill.
