Community Resources-UNICEF

Various organizations are committed to providing quality healthcare and promoting public safety. UNICEF is an example of an organization committed to public safety and healthcare. This paper discusses UNICEF’s mission and vision. Also, it evaluates the quality of care and equality provided by UNICEF. Furthermore, it identifies UNUCEF’s source of funds and its impact on health and safety.

Organization’s Mission and Vision

Vomma.org (n.d.) reports that UNICEF’s mission is “to advocate for the protection of children’s rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential.” The mission statement advocates for children’s public health and safety. Firstly, it enables UNICEF to champion children’s rights. Notably, the rights prohibit discrimination and violence against children (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). Furthermore, it champions children’s privacy, access to health, adequate nutrition, proper clothing, access to education, and cultural congruence when caring for children (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). By so doing, UNICEF aims to improve children’s health and safety. Secondly, the mission statement enables UNICEF to provide for children’s basic needs. This includes adequate nutrition, shelter, clothing, education, and healthcare services (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a). Thirdly, the mission enables UNICEF to champion programs that facilitate the growth and development of children. Examples of these programs include providing quality education and protection from sexual violence and substance and drug abuse (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a).

Vomma.org (n.d.) reports that UNICEF’s vision is “to create a world where the rights of every child are realized.” To accomplish this vision, UNICEF targets children in marginalized communities, vulnerable populations, and low-income countries. Examples of vulnerable populations include war-torn countries and places affected by natural disasters (Clark et al., 2020). Also, UNICEF operates in more than one hundred and ninety countries to ensure that vulnerable children receive pertinent healthcare needs (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). As earlier stated, UNICEF optimizes health and safety by emphasizing quality education, minimizing child mortalities, and offering inclusive and culturally congruent services (UNICEF.org, n.d.-a).

The initiatives of civil society organizations support UNICEF’s mission and vision. These organizations collaborate with UNICEF to offer pertinent services to vulnerable children. Notably, the organizations facilitate the provision of adequate nutrition, safe water, basic education, and adequate sanitation(UNICEF.org, n.d.-b). The organizations comprise various groups such as social movements, non-governmental organizations, and faith-based organizations (UNICEF.org, n.d.-b). For example, Rotary International partners with UNICEF to empower girls and promote gender equity (UNICEF.org, n.d.-b).

Ability to Promote Equal Opportunity and Improve the Quality of Life

UNICEF is dedicated to providing equal opportunity and optimizing children’s quality of life. To begin with, it champions gender equality. This aims to ensure that girls and women attain their potential in various aspects (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Secondly, its social policy seeks to provide equitable opportunities to all children. The social policy acknowledges that poverty should be eradicated to enable children to access equitable opportunities (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Thirdly, UNICEF seeks to avail timely and quality healthcare services to each child during emergencies. According to this provision, all children have the right to both emergency and long-term healthcare services (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Fourthly, UNICEF is dedicated to child survival by minimizing child mortality rates globally. This is accomplished via initiatives such as immunization, proper nutrition, and the provision of safe water and proper sanitation (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Fifthly, it is dedicated to ensuring equality in access to education. Based on this provision, girls, boys and children living with disabilities have an equal right to quality education (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c).

However, various factors impede UNICEF’s efforts to achieve quality healthcare and equal opportunity. For instance, some cultural practices advocate for child and teenage marriages (Clark et al., 2020). This impedes the ability of girls to attain their potential. Other practices, such as female genital mutilation, are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates (Clark et al., 2020). Also, physical barriers that can impede access to quality healthcare include a lack of facilities for the physically impaired population and poor transportation for people living in remote areas. Furthermore, children from low-income countries and families with low socio-economic statuses are likely to have limited access to quality healthcare (Clark et al., 2020). Additionally, the lack of strong social support systems such as family and friends lowers the quality of healthcare.

Impact of Funding Sources, Policy, and Legislation

Various partners fund UNICEF. It is worth noting that public partners are the key players that fund UNICEF. For instance, in 2021, they contributed $5.92 billion out of the $8.1 billion collected (UNICEF.org, n.d.-d). Public partners consist of members such as governments, multilateral agencies, and partners from the United Nations (UNICEF.org, n.d.-d). Furthermore, the top contributors in descending order are the USA, Germany, the European Union, the World Bank, Japan, Gavi, and the United Kingdom (UNICEF.org, n.d.-d). The other top donors are Sweden, Norway, and Canada (UNICEF.org, n.d.-d).

Funding decisions and policies are likely to impact service provision to the target population (children and their families). Decisions to increase funding imply that UNICEF will have adequate resources. As such, quality healthcare, nutritional services, education, safe water, and sanitation services will be provided to the target population. This will improve patient safety and result in better healthcare outcomes. On the other hand, decisions to minimize funding imply that UNIEF will have limited resources. This is likely to impede the provision of healthcare and other essential services. Withdrawal of funding is expected to lower the quality of healthcare and worsen health outcomes in the target population. Furthermore, policies that direct UNICEF to cut down its expenditure are likely to limit access to healthcare services.

Impacts on the Health and Safety Needs of a Local Community

UNICEF optimizes children’s health and safety. As earlier stated, it avails timely and quality healthcare services to each child during emergencies (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). It acknowledges that children have the right to both emergency and long-term healthcare services (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Also, it is dedicated to child survival by minimizing child mortality rates globally. This is accomplished via initiatives such as immunization, proper nutrition, and the provision of safe water and proper sanitation (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c). Furthermore, it aims to ensure safety and inclusivity for all children. To promote safety and inclusivity, UNICEF advocates for protecting children’s rights, educating adolescents, gender equality, and nondiscriminatory practices toward disabled children (UNICEF.org, n.d.-c).

Nurses are significant healthcare providers whose roles promote UNICEF’s programs. Firstly, they are involved in the provision of emergency and long-term care. By so doing, they will access vulnerable children and families to provide timely care. Secondly, nurses play a key role in patient and public education. This will enable them to champion gender equality and nondiscriminatory practices against children living with disabilities.

Conclusion

UNICEF is dedicated to providing quality healthcare and promoting child safety. It accomplishes this by offering nutritional, educational, and healthcare services. Pubic partners comprising of government are UNICEF’s key donors. It is anticipated that an increase in donations will optimize UNICEF’s operations and improve the quality of service delivery.
