Community Resources- The United Nations Children’s Fund

Community Resources- The United Nations Children’s Fund

According to Clark et al. (2020), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is a global organization whose legality is authorized by the United Nations General Assembly. The Convention on the Rights of the Child guides UNICEF’s operations (UNICEF, n.d.-a). It aims to protect the rights of children and fulfill their basic needs. UNICEF promotes the wellbeing of children by advocating for the formulation of policies and availing relevant services (UNICEF, n.d.-a). This paper evaluates how UNICEF promotes public health, improves safety and quality of life, and promotes equality in the community.

Relevance of the Organization’s Mission and Vision

UNICEF (n.d.-a) reports that UNICEF’s mission is “to promote the rights and wellbeing of every child in everything we do.” UNICEF (n.d.-a) reports that its vision is “to create a world where the rights of every child are realized.” The mission and vision statements advocate for the perpetual indiscriminate protection of children. To achieve this, UNICEF focuses on health promotion and prevention for all children globally (UNICEF, n.d.-a). Additionally, it facilitates various programs: nutrition, proper sanitation and hygiene, vaccination and immunization, and HIV/AIDS (UNICEF, n.d.-a). Nutritional programs help to avert malnutrition. Proper sanitation helps to prevent diseases associated with poor hygiene, such as cholera, whereas immunization boosts children’s immunity and protects them from diseases such as polio and diphtheria (UNICEF, n.d.-a). These programs increase the quality of healthcare services and improve children’s safety.

UNICEF is committed to providing quality education to every child. To achieve this, various programs have been established. They include innovativeness in education, early childhood development, disabled children, and gender equality (UNICEF, n.d.-a). Notably, UNICEF focuses on developing countries and vulnerable communities. UNICEF advocates for children’s inclusivity and protection (UNICEF, n.d.-a). This is accomplished via partnerships with countries and other organizations to provide services such as adolescent development and gender equity (UNICEF, n.d.-a). The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is an intergovernmental initiative that supports UNICEF’s mission and vision. The USAID champions various aspects such as food security, global health, nutrition, education, and gender equality (UNICEF, n.d.-b). Education and gender equality fulfill UNICEF’s goal of promoting the rights of every child. USAID’s global health and nutrition programs are harmonious with UNICEF’s child survival efforts that aim at minimizing child mortality rates (UNICEF, n.d.-b).

The Organization’s Ability to Promote Equal Opportunity and the Quality of Life

According to Clark et al. (2020), UNICEF advocates for equal opportunities using initiatives such as child survival, education, children with disabilities, gender equality, social policy, and child protection. The social policy focuses on vulnerable communities and developing countries to minimize child poverty (UNICEF, n.d.-a). The social policy entails programs such as health coverage and educational subsidies (UNICEF, n.d.-a). By so doing, there is improved access to quality healthcare services and education. Children with Disabilities is a program that seeks to eliminate discrimination against disabled children (UNICEF, n.d.-a). This is accomplished by creating inclusive education, health environments, and social protection (Clark et al., 2020). Gender equality directs both boys and girls to access similar opportunities in every sector, such as education (UNICEF, n.d.-a).

Various factors impede the achievement of equal opportunity and quality of life. Cultural practices such as child marriages minimize access to education for girls (Clark et al., 2020). Female genital mutilation is a health risk and a violation of children’s rights (Clark et al., 2020). Cultural and attitudinal aspects such as stereotyping affect children with disabilities. Low socioeconomic status also prevents access to education and quality healthcare services. Families may be unable to afford transportation or translation charges. Lastly, children living with disabilities are faced with physical barriers, such as the inability to access specific buildings or transportation (Clark et al., 2020).

Impact of Funding Sources, Policy, and Legislation on the Organization’s Provision Of Services

Voluntary contributions are the main sources of funding for UNICEF. Both public and private partners are key stakeholders (UNICEF, n.d.-c). In 2021, UNICEF received approximately $8.1 billion (UNICEF, n.d.-c). The cumulative contributions from the public sector amounted to $5.92 billion, whereas the private sector contributed $2.18 billion (UNICEF, n.d.-c). These findings reveal that most of UNICEF’s operations are dependent on funding from the public sector. Policies that cause the withdrawal of public partners from UNICEF will impede its routine operations. Conversely, the entrance of new public partners will improve UNICEF’s operations. Public contributions originate from governments and global partnerships, whereas private contributions originate from individuals, non-governmental organizations, and national committees (UNICEF, n.d.-c).

Funding decisions affect the provision of services to families and children. Policies that reduce or eliminate public partners impede UNICEF’s programs (UNICEF, n.d.-c). Accordingly, children’s access to health care services, proper nutrition, education, sanitation, and hygiene will be reduced. As a result, this will predispose children to environmental hazards, eliminate their rights, and reduce their quality of life.

The Organization’s Work Impacts on the Health and Safety Needs of a Local Community

UNICEF’s programs improve the health and safety of children in different communities. Its child survival program has reduced mortality rates by availing maternal and child health services, immunization programs, and the prevention of communicable diseases (Clark et al., 2020). Additionally, proper nutrition and sanitation have improved the quality of life of children by averting malnutrition and other diseases (Clark et al., 2020). UNICEF has helped eliminate discrimination against disabled children and gender-based inequalities (Clark et al., 2020). By so doing, every child has access to equal opportunities.

Lastly, nurses can play a significant role in the promotion of UNICEF’s programs. Nurses provide maternal and child health services and immunizations. Additionally, nurses are involved in child development by monitoring the progress of children through various milestones. Nurses are frontline stakeholders in patient education. They can promote the social and behavioral health of adolescents and educate parents on proper nutrition.
