Communication Strategies: Personality Type and Conflicts

Communication Strategies: Personality Type and Conflicts

My Enneagram Test results, as shown in the image below, indicated that I have a type 2 personality with a self-preservation variant. An explanation of the type of personalities evaluated using the test indicates that people with type 2 personality are helpers who value selflessness, love, and giving. Individuals with type 2 personality are also extroverted.

I think my personality type plays a vital role in my interaction with others. For instance, it affects my ability to resolve conflicts by making me avoid conflict or choose accommodation as my conflict resolution strategy. According to Zengetwa (2020), the accommodation conflict resolution strategy is characterized by putting less effort into conflict resolution and accepting the conflicting party’s proposal. I also avoid confrontations, thus limiting my ability to resolve conflict because instead of looking for a mutually beneficial conclusion, I look for the conclusion that favours the other party so that I can end the conflict. My personality also affects my communication style. According to Kadam et al. (2018), personality traits such as conscientiousness, agreeableness, extroversion, and assertiveness increase the likelihood of effective communication. My extraversion nature makes me select communication channels that allow [people to interact and exchange information. I also maintain transparency when sharing information with others to build trust. My extraversion nature may also facilitate effective conflict management by creating a conducive environment for conflicting parties to express themselves. According to Cahn & Abigail (2014), communication creates the foundation for effective conflict management by enabling each party to voice their issues and propose a solution that would effectively eliminate them. Therefore, I use my social skills to build conversations with conflicting parties to come up with ways to eliminate the conflict.
