The Impact Women Leaders Have on Overcoming Gender Bias

Women leaders play a vital role in helping other women overcome gender bias. One of the impacts that women leaders have on overcoming gender bias is facilitating the development of policies that promote women’s inclusion and gender equality. According to Smith & Sinkford (2022), including women in leadership positions are essential in developing inclusive policies, laws, and funding priorities (p.1149). The second impact is eliminating the stereotypes that suggest that women are not good at leadership. According to Harris (2019), companies that include women in leadership perform better because of skills such as emotional intelligence, empathy, perseverance, intuition, and multi-tasking abilities (p.4). Therefore, the picture women leaders portray is essential in overcoming gender bias.

Characteristics Common to Successful Women Leaders

One of the characteristics of successful women leaders is empathy. According to Kooskora & Piigli (2016), empathy enables women leaders to use a people-oriented approach, thus increasing leadership effectiveness (p.113). For example, in the Groysberg & Bell (2011) case study, Halstead used a people-oriented approach to effectively lead the company. Her approach included meeting every member of the company to create a culture of open communication where staff and soldiers and get their perspectives on what they liked and disliked about the unit and what was effective and ineffective (Groysberg & Bell, 2011, p.7). Other characteristics common to women leaders are self-awareness and self-confidence. According to Kooskora & Piigli (2016), self-confidence and self-awareness enable leaders to understand and see the emotions of everybody in the organization, making leadership easier (p.114). Successful women leaders also use situational leadership to lead based on the atmosphere in the organization and the types of people in the organization. I am currently learning to use situational leadership alongside my current leadership style, transformational leadership. Both types of leadership are effective depending on the situations present. Consistently, situational and transformational leadership differ in that transformational leadership emphasizes inspiring positive change among the people one leads, while situational leadership means modifying one’s leadership approach to fit the demands of the group or individual team members.

Conclusion

Overcoming gender bias has been one of the agendas pushed by women leaders across the world. The main impact of women leaders in overcoming gender bias includes facilitating the development of policies that promote women’s inclusion and gender equality and eliminating the stereotypes that suggest that women are not good at leadership. Women leaders also guide others on effective leadership based on the characteristics of successful women leaders, such as empathy, self-awareness, and self-confidence. Successful women leaders also use situational leadership to support their people-oriented approach.
