Characteristics of Effective Leaders

Successful Industry Leaders

Technological Industry- Tim Cook (Apple Inc. CEO)

Tim Cook has been at the helm of Apple Inc. CEO since 2011 after taking over from Steve Jobs. Tim Cook is renowned for his democratic leadership style, a sharp contrast to his predecessor, who was an autocratic leader. Cherry (2019) avers that a democratic managerial style fosters talent collaboration and consensus-building among top organizational employees.

Retail Industry- Jeff Bezos (Former Amazon CEO)

Jeff Bezos, the immediate former CEO at Amazon, is known for his transformational leadership skills. The CEO used a pragmatic approach to leadership, such that he motivated employees to achieve more than they thought they could achieve. Bezos’ leadership style ensured everyone in the organization was committed to the company’s objectives.

Finance Industry- George Soros (Chairman of Soros Fund Management and Open Society)

George Soros is known for his maverick hedge fund management. Soros’ flagship project, the Quantum Fund, is revered in the finance world. His success in the finance world is attributable to his risk-loving approach to hedge fund management.

Key Leadership Characteristics

Ability to Influence

Leadership is all about influencing followers. An effective organizational leader ought to be a go-to person so that employees can consult on various issues (Landry, 2018). Also, an influential leader is capable of building consensus and bringing a team together. With such capabilities, a leader can successfully influence employees to pursue organizational goals.

Decisiveness

According to Landry (2018), today’s fast-paced business environment needs leaders who make quick strategic decisions. That means acting quickly even when there is insufficient information. A decisive leader has the bigger picture of their organization’s needs at their fingertips and, hence, can act promptly to grab emerging opportunities.

Relationship between Leadership Characteristics and Company Values

Firstly, decisive leadership breeds discipline. Once the leader makes a decision, employees stick with it unless there are compelling reasons to adjust focus. On the other hand, a leader’s ability to influence others breeds passion in the organization. When there is passion across all organizational segments, all organizational participants focus on organizational goals.
