Chapter Five Graphic Organizer and Reflection
Reflection
Chapter five emphasizes the importance of discipline in effectively managing a classroom. In my opinion, discipline forms the basis of creating a conducive learning environment free of tension between the teacher and learners. According to Charles & Cole (2019), the teacher should develop plans and implementation strategies for discipline programs. The essence of these programs is to allow the teacher to lay out their behavioral expectations of the students and develop mechanisms that ensure students adhere to the teacher’s expectations. However, the teacher should exercise patience with their discipline enhancement program since it involves a gradual shift in student behavior and attitudes. The chapter also teaches about the importance of developing positive relations between teachers and students. A positive relationship will ensure both parties can communicate effectively to reach amicable solutions to emerging issues.
Teachers should embrace reinforcement measures that will ensure total adherence to their expectations about behavior and discipline. I believe teachers should stand their ground as a sign of leadership. For this reason, there should be consequences for bad behavior. These consequences act as a deterrent against any behavior that negatively impacts the learning environment. Apart from instilling discipline, teachers should also focus on improving the competence levels among students. In my opinion, when students can effectively complete tasks, they are motivated to embrace good behavior. Further, Charles & Cole (2019) suggest that competency improves self-esteem levels among students. High self-esteem will inspire students to appreciate the role of discipline as they regard it to be beneficial to their competency. Ultimately, I believe that the topic is a vital source of empowerment for teachers to shape behavior in the classroom.
