Chapter 3 discusses checking for understanding. Essentially, this chapter explains the gap between learning and teaching, how to see it, how to make learners comfortable with the struggle it implies, and how to respond to it. The chapter then provides nine techniques teachers can use to check for understanding. The first technique is to replace self-report. Lemov (2021) affirms that one of the most common methods tutors use to find out whether their learners understand what they have been teaching is to ask them directly, but this is never a guarantee that learners understand the content. The second strategy is retrieval practice. Naturally, students forget, and forgetting is one of the constant issues in almost any environment that entails learning. The other technique is standardizing the teaching format by streamlining data-collecting and making more accurate and efficient observations.
The next technique is active observation, in which the teacher can closely monitor and observe learners as they conduct themselves during instruction. The other technique is to “show me.” In show me, learners actively present the tutor with visual proof of their understanding. This allows tutors to quickly evaluate a whole class’s understanding less or more at a glance (Lemov 190).
The other important technique used to check for understanding is affirmative checking. Affirmative checking is often a final tool that can assist the teacher in using observation to check for understanding. It entails the intended use of checkpoints where learners have to get confirmation that their work is on target or correct and that they are ready to move on to the next phase. The other techniques are showing call and embracing the culture of error. However, with the help of administrators and other stakeholders, this will then shape how students react to each other’s troubles and struggles.
